Bert Weedon dies
I'm sure many of you remember tis gentleman.
RIP Bert http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-17781762 |
"We are normal and we dig Bert Weedon, ha ha!"
(from the Bonzo Dog song "We are Normal") I first heard about Bert Weedon from that Bonzo Dog song and, out of curiousity, I asked about him from a Brit friend of mine, a fellow guitar player. He said, "Oh Bert! He's the one most everyone first learned guitar from, he's hugely famous!" A few months later he showed me a copy of the instruction book (tuition as he called it). I showed him the U.S. equivalents, Mel Bay and Alfred's. I don't know much about him as an entertainer, but his influence on beginning guitarists was profound. If the Brit kids got the same kind of inner thrill of achievement by mastering the simple tunes in their first primer that we U.S. kids got from Mel Bay or Alfred's, then Bert roundly deserves the fame accorded to him. It is a wonderful thing to leave behind a legacy of being influential to so many lives... RIP, Bert... ... |
The BBC really should apologise for that article.
Of all the people they could have got to speak about his career and wide ranging influence they dragged out Mike Reed. |
