Torpedoes bouncing off even when hit at 90 degrees
Just had 3 torpedoes in a row bouncing off a large merchant ship during my last patrol I launched them at a range of 1 km at an angle of around 90 degrees which I thought would be perfect. Made me angry! Lol had to go back to port with my tail between my legs cursing at Bernard for whatever the hell he did wrong... Can anyone shed some light on why they are doing this??? Was it just bad luck? Is there a tutorial somewhere on here about how to properly use the TDC?? I might need pictures too :haha:

and did you set them to run to the right depth, if they hit the curved bottom of the keel they can bounce off. you need them either deep enough to go right under the keel with a magnetic settting, or shallow enough to hit a vertical section of side of the ship with an impact setting.

True enough. Here are the keel depths from stock SH3. GWX has different ships, but they should have approximately the same keel depths for the same size vessel:
CAVEAT: allow for the sea state when setting running depths. Ships can rise and fall by 1 to 5 meters so it's easy to run a magnetic eel under them in heavy seas and be too deep for the exploder to trip.:damn: small tanker...........4.8 meters liberty cargo..........5.8 small merchant.......6.8 coastal merchant....6.9 victory ship...........7.3 C2 cargo...............7.8 troop transport.......8.5 C3 cargo...............9.0 auxillary cruiser......9.0 T2 tanker..............9.5 T3 tanker............10.7 large ocean liner...12.6 PT boat......................1.2 (don't waste your eels) Armed trawler..............2.5 (desperation shots only) LST...........................3.3 (and you are so close to the landing zone why?) Most destroyers and DEs draw 2.4 to 4.0 depending on nationality and class. Set your eels to 2.0 (and pray) if you really must take one on. Corvettes & Black Swan sloops draw 3.5 meters CVE Casablanca..............6.7 CVE Bouge.....................8.2 CV Illustrous...................8.3 Fiji light cruiser...............5.0 Dido light cruiser.............6.3 Revenge class BB............8.5 King George V.................8.5 HMS Nelson..................10.7 |

its in the TDC window (the one that is below the map window, and it brings up a map without grids and a bunch of dials.

The game emulates the historical issues of the faulty impact and magnetic triggers. The faulty impact triggers must impact at 90 degress (+- 10 degrees) AOB in order to detonate. Any angle other than this runs a very high risk of a dud. The magnetic triggers are prone to misfire and may prematurely detonate in rough seas over distances greater than 1 kilometer. Keep this in mind when you prepare your attack runs. :up:

If you had 3 duds in a row the most likely culprit is you were hitting on the curved hull of the ship with impact torpedoes.
I've had 2 duds in a row in-game, but never 3 in a row. But if your depth is set wrong they will glance off of the curved portion of the bottom of the hull. The most common in-game defect of magnetic torpedoes is pre-detonation, which usually happens outside of 1000m. Steve |
Yeah, I worked out what I did wrong. It was the depth setting was too deep and they were hitting curved section of the hull. Thanks for the help mateys.
