Physics of ships that were torpedoed?

Hello,

I am having a very serious problem with SH5, the ships that I hit with torpedoes behave in such a way that completely ruins all the immersion: they jump out of water(!) from 1 meter to huge leaps of tens of meters, if broken into two, they fly apart very easily - from few meters to tens of meters(!).

I have this behaviour with TDW FX_Update 00019, or with BRF1.3 (no I did not use both mods together;)), and now, I've disabled ALL mods, the stock game also does this. This does not happen ALL the time, but extremely often for me. Is this problem common knowledge?

I usually test by going into "Against the odds" Historical mission and just blow up the friendly tankers that are in front of me in the harbour. Here are some photos (I could not make an ingame screenshot, pressing printscreen makes a picture of the big chested lady from the intro)

Hi 89:salute:

Have you every installed a torp mod (1 hit 1 kill etc):06:
If so, perhaps part of the mod remains after uninstalling.

Also - you should not test on your own ships
If you do not get ctd - then flying boats:03:

This is a good mission (quick to load) for testing torps etc

Thanks for your answer!

I do not have any torpedo mods installed yet, but yes I was testing on own boats for quickness. So its only own boats that behave like that? And yes, I did get ctd when I blew up own boat and and TDW stuff installed, without his mods I the game does not crash but they fly all over the place:)

Many thanks for the mission suggestion, I'll install and test again.:salute:

Oh, and next time don't photo or scan your screen. Just press Ctrl+F11 :03:

Yep, with testing mission that was kindly suggested by Trevally, the boats no longer fly. So that's the good news.

The bad news is that their sinking behaviour is much-MUCH more simplified than SH3's. Boats stay level, draw water without listing to one side, etc

Is there a mod that addresses that?

Cheers for that, I was pressing printscreen but all I always got was the woman from the intro movie :)

That is very weird, maybe its cause from hitting the boat in shallow waters and close to a port and land. Combination of two could cause a weird glitch in the model physics. Like it doesn't know what to do, its too shallow to sink while close to land, so it pops up.

No-no, its not that. There was definitely space to sink there, I've checked. In the second picture the depth was more than a 100 meters. Its a bug with boats under "friendly fire" - no toooo much of a big deal really, as I'm not going to torpedo own boats very often.

Lol, I'm going to have to give it a whirl then.

I've noticed this, too. It's very difficult to tell if I've damaged a ship enough to sink it when it doesn't really do anything but sink all nice and level. A mod that fixes this behavior would be awesome.

P.S. 2nd and 3rd pictures - same ship.
P.P.S. Prop still rotated on last picture.

The FX update mod will cause ship sinking mechanics to work correctly only if the zones of the ship use the entries defined in FX Update's zones.cfg file. If new ships are made and are setup to use the stock zones.cfg file entries then they will have the stock SH5 sinking mechanics (boring and dull). I went and changed all the stock SH5 ships to use FX Update's zones.cfg file entries in the FX Update mod.

I would suspect that new ships are using the stock SH5 zones.cfg file entries and that is why you see them not listing or sinking :yep:

Thanks for your replies!

I have installed the TDW FX mod again and, the ship behaviour is better, much better!

Just a couple of comments about FX mod: ships are not shaken violently when hit by torpedoes, listing to one side is still marginal - needs to be much more pronounced like in HMS Bahram youtube video and like it was in SH4 (is it possible to "borrow" code from previous SH and "inject" it into SH5?), immediatly after impact, there is hardly any immedate listing.

There are also some bugs:
Pay attention to completely separated bow of the ship - can it float like that?http://img842.imageshack.us/img842/1...0203151911.jpg

Some time later, it still afloat!http://img842.imageshack.us/img842/1...0203151944.jpg

TheDarkWraith 02-03-12 12:47 PM

according to the devs they coded the game to act this way. Pieces can break off and float for some time. I remember posing this same question and people responded back saying that it was historically correct to see some pieces still floating or to see ships returning to port missing pieces.
