Good Patrol Areas of the coast of America

My Kaluen has transferred from a Type VII boat to a Type IX in 1941. It's getting late in the year and Operation Drumbeat is in the offing. What are some good patrol grids of the coast of the USA? If you are kind enough to answer, could you do so by grid reference?

For example you can't beat grid EU88 South West of Freetown if you are patrolling the West Coast of Africa.

Thanks,

David I

The single best patrol spot for Drumbeat would have to be right off Cape Hatteras, in CA79/CA87. There the continental shelf of shallow water is narrowest, and all coastal traffic going north/south has to round the cape. You can stay out in deeper waters and make occasional raids into the shallows (better do it at night with no planes around, though). Watch out for tankers especially - they're the best targets there and come by very regularly.

Off New York is worth your attention, but be careful with shallow water. Patrols at Hatteras are sporadic, but off New York you're more likely to run into a regular destroyer or two. CA53 can be a good spot though.

I prefer the 'Miami straights'. Between Florida and the Bahamas. Deep and heavy traffic with irregular Patrols, juicy.

This. Gotta love the tankers.
