fuel replenishment
Hello sea-dogs, have a query. I am presently playing 1.4 version of SH4 with no mods (waiting for SH4 Gold to come so I can then use the TMO mod) and my first mission is to pester the enemy merchant shipping around Honshu.
I spent most of the journey down to that area on the surface so over half of my fuel is already gone (game set to realistic fuel use settings). I have sent one merchant to the bottom and have now been told to pick on escorts as well, so would like to meander around for a bit and use up my remaining torps if I strike lucky, but am concerned that I might not be able to get back to PH or Midway to take on more fuel if I spend too much time hunting and would then have to abort the whole mission. In SH3, once you have got rid of your torpedoes you can instantly teleport back to base if you are too low on fuel to get back in real time. Is it the same in SH4 - or (better) is there a base I can go to within reasonable distance please? |
I'm afraid there is no teleportation feature in SH4. If you are prowling off Honshu, most likely the nearest USN base is the one you departed from (either Midway or Pearl Harbor).
Did you use a speed of about 9 to 10 knots while outbound? That seems to be the most economical. |
I used Standard, which is about 11 knots on my Porpoise I think :)
Oh well... serves me right - I ought to have gone into Midway on the outward leg and see if they would kindly top me up again. Thank you Dread Knot ( luv the name :) ) |
There is a mod to teleport. I have never used it but I have it somewhere in my files.
|
I used to travel from Midway to Japan w/o using much more than ¼ tank of fuel.

For example: right now, I'm in an S-Boat and get the best fuel economy at about 8.5 knots. A Porpoise Class, if I remember correctly, is somewhere around 9.5 knots. The good thing about TMO (and RFB too, I think) is that there is an icon/button you can push that will calculate your maximum range at any given speed |
teleporter could be useful Irish - I will wait until I get the upgrade before I put any mods on - but will keep it in mind, thank you :)
Wernher, I shall look for that button when I get TMO :) |
She-Wolf,
There is a TMO 1.4 mod that should work for you until you get you gold version. It's not v2.5, but it's better than stock! :yep: |

I thought this was part of the stock game. |
Until you have TMO the rule of thumb is to always travel at 2/3 speed. You'll rarely if ever have fuel problems.
|
thank you Hylander, noted :)
Steve - right, will tuck that one away... I did start going down to Manila to see if I could refuel there - but then the anchor icon disappeared, so I am now hunting the area for suitable prey and will worry about the fuel when I am done and want to go home. @Sailor Steve - Am reading Cruel Sea at bedtime. :) |
Worst case if you need to, go to your SH4 in My Documents.
Open the Data Folder, Then open the CFG Folder, Then open the GameplaySettings.cfg file. The 4th one down the list should be LimitedFuel=true. Just change the true to false, and you should be able to get back to base, or take that Pacific cruise you always wanted to. |

My copy of Monsarrat At Sea should be arriving any day now. :sunny: |
Hylander - what a good idea - I would never have thought of that:up:
@Sailor Steve. Just got to the bit where they lost Sorrel.. |
You're welcome! :sunny:
So what kinda pooch is that in your avatar? |
