dumb AI

i was on patrol off britains coast, submerged ..3 destroyers tried getting me but eventually gave up and sailed away..i surfaced and was just offshore cruising up the coast along some bases (at night)..spotted 4 destroyers all just sitting there..took them all out with 1 torp apeice..they were spread out pretty much and they didn,t react at all when the explosions started..just sat there..it was fun hitting them but not realistic at all..is this a bug or normal??
i was gonna post a shot of my mods but guess it won,t allow me to???

That's pretty standard, I've had plenty of similar experiences in stock SH3 + 4.

I guess the devs had more important problems on their hands. Wasn't really an issue in SH3, because you never really got sent into ports.

I guess raiding ports is good for a bit of daring fun, but realistically I beleive it was a very rare occurence (steve?) so don't let it bother you too much!;)

Why you pickin' on me? :O:

As far as I know it happened twice. Scapa Flow was almost impossible, and only happened because Admiral Doenitz planned it personally with the help of aerial photography. Following the attack the British reinforced the entrances to the harbor, and after that time any British base should be impossible to penetrate.

The other was by Werner Hartenstein in U-156. He observed the harbor at Aruba for several days before deciding it was relatively undefended and making his decision to go ahead with the attack. He sank three small tankers and attempted to set the oil field on fire but failed.

Basically all the SH games make harbor-raiding much easier than it ever was in real life.

installing this mod makes a big difference:

IRAI (Intelligent Random AI) by TheDarkWraith

I sometimes wish that I had not installed this (especially if you have three destroyers circling above you after an attack....) but it is a needed mod!

Sober made a great discovery and I think this is the fix to this issue.

He noticed a depth of water that all boat will get stuck at during their patrol waypoints (guarding harbours). This or they are docked, is what is causing this dumb DD.

I have been meaning to fix this in OHII - it will happen soon:oops:

After sinking the USS Hood in Scapa Flow during twilight I was expecting to have signed my own death sentence with al the escorts around. But the burning and slow sinking of the Hood didn't seem to bother them as none of them even started up their diesels.. :06: :06:

Have the IRAI mod installed so don't really know why they did nothing..

'Docked' ships will do nothing but sit there :nope: The game will not let them move.

Yeah I did my first raid on Scapa Flow yesterday and realized that the destroyers was just sitting there. But I was happy because I play from a week back 100% realistic and set of 4 perfect torpedoes sinking the hood and queen elizabeth (if im not mistaking) with those torpedoes and raobf after planning my attack and all from 6000m away. The hit's were maybe just 1min apart after i calculated everything for both attacks and sending them of almost simultaneously. Very happy!!:D

What surprised me was the 2 destroyers following me maybe for 30km as I got out of Scapa Flow with out me noticing them and then attacking me from behind in the fog and I had to replay my escape 3times just because i almost had no batteries left and could only do 1kps submerged in max 70m deep water. So they chased me anyway even if it was not the destroyers in the harbor so I got some realism.

Which is accurate. A ship at in port will usually be in a steam-down condition and obtaining power from the shore. It will take hours to raise steam to a point where the ship can move. Even if the ship has steam up it will take several minutes just to weigh anchor. Here is a good discussion of the subject.

Makes sense!! So maybe one should not pay so much attention to that but would be nice if they started to move after a hour or so if you are still there for any reason. But I guess there is bigger problems to pay attention to still in the game.

But even the patrolling ones will stick to their paths as long as you stay out of their detection zones, despite the mayhem being unleashed in plain sight.

I think I will stay away from harbour raiding, too much of a duckshoot once you get past the patrols... my suspension of disbelief won't stretch that far!
