Running Older Missions In GWX3

I decided to get back into SH III after several years away from the game. I installed the game, patched it to 1.4b and then decided to install GWX3 GOLD.

Everything seems to be working fine but I have an issue with some old missions.

I used to make SH III missions back in the day and so I wanted to try them in GWX3. Unfortunately, they are not working. When I load the game I see my old mission names in the mission list, but when I click on one there is no briefing info and if I click on START, nothing loads.

I fired up the Mission Editor and loaded my old missions and hit SAVE, thinking that might somehow 'update' them to GWX3 standards. However, they still would not play in the game itself.

I noticed that in GWX3 GOLD they included a couple of my original missions (Ice Ice Baby 1 & 2), which were created in unmodded SH III, as were all of my missions. So, it appears that they were able to get them to work in GWX3.

Does anyone know how I can get my old unmodded missions to work in GWX3 GOLD?

Most of the vessels in GWX3.0 have been given modifications...both your missions ready packaged with the supermod do work though.

Yes, that's my point. If I take an original copy of those missions (which I still have) and try to play them in GWX3, they won't even load.

So I'm trying to find out how I can get them to work in GWX3, as I have other original missions that I created and would like to run in GWX3.

I don't think that is possiple because damage models etc. were tweaked...far better you use the current ME in GWX3.0 to create new missions.

Ok, I tried a little test experiment. I simply took one of the default missions (Bismark), made a copy of the mission folder and renamed it.
So, this mission should run perfectly, correct? It's the exact same mission but in a new mission folder.

Well, the mission does not run. When I click on the copied mission name, the briefing does not appear and if I click on Start nothing happens.

The mission SHOULD play without any issues, since it is a default mission and was not edited at all. I tried the same test with default GMX missions and the same thing happened.

Is this some kind of limitation with GFX3...? (In other words, no new single missions can be added to GMX..?)

Read #5

Changes were made to files that affect anything in previous releases.

If you go to the GWX3.0 page some of it is explained:

I seemed to have figured out part of the problem. The mission name (filename) and the mission folder must be exactly the same. I probably knew this years ago but forgot.

So now when I click on my old mission's name the briefing does appear. When I click Start, the mission begins loading normally. However, just before the mission is fully loaded, the screen goes black and my game crashes. This happens with all my original missions that I created.

So, unmodded missions are not compatible with GFX3? Since two of my older missions were used in GFX3, I assume there is a way to get them to run. Is there some kind of trick or workaround?

How did the dev team get my original 'Ice Ice Baby' to run in GFX3..? I can't seem to do it.

I'm sorry but I can't answer that final part because it was not an area I was involved with....I did create abot a dozen additional missions but I was using the updated files.

MANY Units had thier class or Names changed starting with GWX 2.0 I think it was.
So what may have been an Armed Trawler in older versions or stock has totally been re-class/renamed so the older Mission files can't find them and.............
CTD!
(BBW taught me that)

Thanks for that info. I was kind of afraid that was the issue. However, it seems strange that these 'older' missions don't crash the Mission Editor. You can even 'run' these missions in the ME with no apparent issues.

I don't suppose there is a list somewhere of the 'changes' you mentioned?

Aviar

Madox58 12-27-11 02:37 PM

The only list I had of all or most of the changes is long gone.
:nope:
BBW sent me list way back and I could have sworn I burned a copy of alot of stuff to DVD.
But I have not been able to locate it.
I know it's on none of my HDs as I've searched every single one of the 10 I'm linked to.
If you could give me a link to one of the Missions that does not work I could look at it and see if I spot something obvious.

Aviar 12-27-11 03:39 PM

No problem. I actually uploaded the mission to this site in 2005 and it is still here ---> http://www.subsim.com/subsim_files/patches2005_sh3.html

Scroll down to Custom Missions and look for the mission named 'Ice Ice Baby'.

Normally I would let this issue go because I understand that mods sometimes make older missions incompatible. However, after installing GWX3, I noticed that they included Ice Ice Baby in their Single Mission set.

So, they obviously found a way to make the mission work in GWX3. I looked at THEIR version in the ME and it looks exactly the same exept that they changed the BR PT Boat into a BR CO Flower.

Even if I delete the BR PT Boat in MY original mission, it will still crash my game if I try and run it in GWX3. In fact, if I delete every unit except my sub, the game still crashes. There is obviously something going on here. My guess is that there is a simple workaround to getting these older missions to work in GWX3.

Got it.
I'll look at it right now.
:yep:

Madox58 12-27-11 04:56 PM

Original Ice Ice Baby 1........
Change the Iceburgs from a Type 105 to a Type 16 and it fired right up.
:yep:
As I was about to admire the pretty Iceburgs?
I got my arse handed to me before I could crash dive!!!
:o
Time in Mission?
MAYBE 10 seconds before the whole world came down on me!!
:haha:
