August 1939

Just installed GWX 3.0 along with SH III Commander 3.2 and I leave port on 8/1/39. I have reached my patrol area and completed the 24 search. Now HQ tells me to continue patrolling and "Good Hunting".

The war doesnt start for another month (pretty much) - do I just look around and practice or what?

Personally I'd go home, tidy up and head out again a couple of days before the outbreak - get into a nice position to do some really nasty damage to the RN.

I think you're supposed to go out shoot a few target ships (although they may, iirc, shoot back once you've hit one, whatever the nationality) and return. I think GWX gives you the renown at the start to compensate for hitting your own shipping. Then get ready for war. :stare:

NO don't sink anything!
Everyone is neutral until the war starts.
Return to port and dock.
In your next patrol war will have started and you will have plenty to sink.

Sail right into Scapa Flow and tie up at the pier. :salute:

Sailor Steve 09-21-11 11:08 AM

On August 19 fourteen u-boats were sent into the North Atlantic to await...something (I doubt they knew what was going on). I do a one-hour 'patrol', cruise around the harbor and tie up again. SH3 Commander then lets me set up my crew the way I want them, and I set 'Days In Base, for 19, which lets me set out again on the 19th. A leisurely cruise through the Channel to my assigned grie and wait for the start of the war.

The other solution is to use Commander to choose a September start date.

The '24-hour' patrol assignment is a holdover from the way the game was originally supposed to work, with lots of missions and zero randomness. I always stay in the same grid for at least two weeks, and then only move if I haven't seen anything at all.

Then order the crew on deck and moon the Royal Navy. Diplomacy at its finest!

Similarly to what Steve has posted...that is why we included the ability to sail from Konigsberg with the 7th/13th Flotilla.

After 4 days you'll receive a radio message recalling you back to base....set Commander to 15 days in base and apply for a transfer to 1st or 2nd Flotilla and you will have plenty of time to get into position prior to the commencement of hostilities as was the case in RL.
