Anyone ever catch the Yamato on her last run?
My side career is in 1945 with a Tench, on my second patrol now off China Coast in East China Sea, not much happening after a week in patrol area.Anyway, the Yamato's last deployment will occur soon and considering being in the area to see if can find her.Anyone ever encounter her in RSRD? Does a contact report go out like it does for some groups in RSRD? Do allied planes attack her at right time and place?

I caught her and her TF traversing the straits (WSW) below Kyushu on (I think) April 8th. Just make sure you catch her before the carrier planes start bombing or you may not get credit for the sinking. Quite an aerial display by the navy dive bombers. Makes for some cool SS.

I don't recall a contact report, maybe a movie after the fact while in port.
As Wern said, the plane attack is a fun catch, just try to get some torps in first. |

Not seen her in FORTS on a final run, there is a TF around that time but it's a jap carrier TF.

I saw the TF with the Yamato and tried to intercept it. After five tries, I gave up. It was moving fast and changing course.

I sunk a yamato on two occasions. Once in the Bungo Straits and one in the gulf outside of the Straights. It was in a small TF on both occasions, but only doing 12 kts. The second encounter was interesting. It sailed off, and I trailed it. Its engines quite. I sank it with 6 torpedoes, most of which were fired while it was dead in the water.
But when it was heading for southern Japan around the time it was sunk by US aircraft, I tired to intercept it (not the failed intercept described above) as it passed through a narrow channel near the southern tip. Two problems. One, the Yamato's TF changed course just as I grabbed my fork and knife expecting to kill it. Two, then it increased speed from a quick 22 kts. to a 27-28 kt sprint after changing course, so changing position to intercept it was futile. Man, that TF was moving like a jackrabbit being chased by a hungry fox, and for good reason it turns out. |
