to the gun guys out there.

Got an new H&R handi rifle chambered in 45/70 gov. and im wondering...what glass should i put on it? nothing too pricey, but something that can take the recoil.

Ideas?

Wow what you get it for? Plan on taking down a bull moose or grizzly? What you have there is something that will stop very big furry animals dead in their tracks.

How's yer shoulder?

Bushnell Elite 3200 10x40 always had a reputation for strength on the shooting forums over this side of the pond. Not cheap though, but not as expensive as the 4200 or 6400 series scopes.
No parallax adjust though.

EDIT:
45/70? must have been watching hickok45's youtube channel :)

I saw the gun at gander and looked up the round. Nice mid range round that can take anything in N. America

Here a is a link to a thread on a site all about optics might be useful:

I'd agree on the lower power ones considering the ideal range on the round I think a 10 power is a bit high
depends on how far away you plan on being from the game I suppose.I'd think a scope designed for use with a
slug gun would take the abuse that 45-70 can dish out.

You secretly planning on a climb to the roof? Nice perch up there.

Not a good idea Gimpy!

Or perhaps he is going to use it to hunt game which is what the rifle is designed for.

Herr-Berbunch 08-17-11 10:58 AM

Just out of shot is a large park-chess game going on, played by some old blokes. Is that not game enough?

no, but i would nail the waterfowl that land in that pond if I could. Campus needs to get rid of that "bird preserve" all they do is poop everywhere.

oh and it's a $250 fine to swim in that fountain. $500 if you do it naked.

also, Props on the pic of WMU!

That's a big round, hurts my shoulder thinking about it. Not too long a range, though...maybe 4X would do. Think in terms of quality on a scope, something that holds zero.

Stealhead 08-17-11 07:03 PM

You have to be a pretty good marksman with a rifle like a Handi rifle it is a single shot breach loader so you only get one shot at whatever you are hunting of course in most cases this is true bolt action, semi auto or muzzle loader you only have one good chance if you are a good hunter and want to avoid causing an animal to suffer because you took and bad shot.

I agree on the 4x that should be just right for that range and you can find 4x scopes for not too much.

Gimpy is in a pretty good region for hunting and fishing actually.

@breadcatcher you can actually get a Handi rifle in several calibers though the 45-70 might have the most kick they do sell them in .308 and 30-06 as well which have greater range you can get one in 22-250 as well which is basically .22 which enough gunpowder to launch the space shuttle it is the ultimate varmint round 4,000 FPS velocity depending on the grain. That thye still make rifles and revolvers in 45-70 shows you how good of a round it is designed way back in 1873.Well probably know all that anyway.

Big Squeeze at that link Steelhead posted knows what he is talking about.

Don't go putting a heavy, oversized scope on that nice rifle. It would make the gun top heavy and out of balance.

The Leupolds in either the VX2 1-4x20 or the VX3 1.5-5x20. (9.5 oz. or less) <------this, or a comparable Burris would compliment that rifle nicely.

Stealhead 08-17-11 10:48 PM

I dont know the Leupolds might out of Gimpys price range though. There are Timberline
3X-9X-32mm by Burris going for $120-187 on a quick Google search though.

gimpy117 08-18-11 12:59 AM

I'll have to look up burris
