What are these mods doing?
I've seen some names of some mods for Dangerous Waters, but mostly only "X has been released now, changes include" -- having some problems to understand what these mods are exactly doing.
For example ComSubSim? LWAMI? DWX? Can somebody explain to me what these mods are doing? Is it still possible to play the default campaign and the Red Storm rising campaign with these mods? Thank you. |
LWAMI does a lot of different things, but a fair summary would be that it fixes broken parts of DW and expands the database. You can play the stock campaign with it and be better off for it, except that the very first mission can be a crap shoot... the SCS mission designers built the mission around an Oscar II that the SCS database designers forgot to give a towed array, so when the database omission is corrected, well, sometimes you spawn too close. Similarly, it will enhance Red Storm Rising until you get to Race of the Cripples, which Bill Nichols designed in part around a stock DW helicopter that couldn't get a MAD hit to save it's life, which he compensated for by having it go straight to where the player spawns. Once you give it a MAD sensor that works... boom.

So despite the things you mention, it is a good idea to get LWAMI?
What about DWX? |
You realize that you are not only asking me if you should use something that is broken, but if you should use something because it is broken. Yes, it is still worth it in spite of those issues!
I'll leave the DWX question to others. |
