Odd warship
I recently intercepted an unprotetected convoy east of Newfoundland. Or so it appeard at first. After two torpedo hits hydrophone operator informed of new warship contact closing fast. I dived deep and it started to ping me with asdic. Warship getting ever closed I prepared for depth charges but it just passed by. No charges. This went on about an hour. Not a single depth charge dropped.
Now what kind of warship has asdic but no depth charges? Convoy it was escorting was east bound so it should have it's racks fully loaded with depth charges. I didn't recognize the warship, though it looked like a destroyer from periscope. I play with GWX 3 and this encounter happened march -42. |
Hard to say without a picture. Did you try looking through the museum in order to try and identify what you saw?

Hedgehogs? If it was firing them and you weren't hit, you might not notice.
Perhaps it was out of depth charges? I'm not sure if there is a count of how many they can drop. |

Long mast and bearing from hydrophone operator is usually enough to go deep. |

Can one hear hedgehogs hitting water, like you can hear depth charges, in the hydrophone?

But on the other hand, h.sie's wolfpack mod isn't released yet. |
Chances are it was an escort that had either run out of cans or wasn't equipped/fitted with any in the first place.

Silent Hunter mystery. Why equip an escort with asdic but not depth charges?
Every commanders wet dream. Very lightly escorted convoy and with only three torpedoes it turns into a nightmare. Could have decimated it with full load:damn: |
Probably more a case of the former than the latter.
|
There's also the opposite - the naval trawlers which have NO detection gear (at least in the beginning of the war) yet still have a rack of ashcans.
