Install TMOwTw 2.14?

First of all, let me say I've been on leave (from Silent Hunter) for quite some time so please excuse my de-evolution. :know:

I've started back up by playing TMO 1.9, but am frustrated. Here's why:

I was chasing a convoy at night (date April, 1942), kept out of sight by keeping distance with decks awash. Seas calm with 1/4 moon. Getting well ahead I positioned my sub at periscope depth, engines off and waited for the merchants. However, the two destroyers sensed I was there and blew my cover. How did they detect me? Radar? They started pinging me after using their spot lights and flairs. Would this have happened in real life? Sorry if this is a rehash. :o

FWIU, in choppy seas I wouldn't be easily detectable. However, I'm not willing to wait around until a storm develops, especially in April!

I'm considering installing TMOwTw 2.14 since is has dumbed down enemy sensors by using JSGME: uninstalling TMO 1.9 and installing TMOwTw 2.14. Do I need to be in port before the install? Thanks!

Try TMO 2.1. (http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/show...70&postcount=1)

Ducimus provided an Easier AI patch for it here...

Either way, you will need to be in port to make these changes. Until then, IIRC, there may be information in the TMO documentation - I believe in the FAQ - which tells you how to dumb down the AI by editing the sensors file.

Welcome back! :salute:

It does seem unrealistic to be detected this way. Based on what I've read here, the AI uses cannot listen and ping at the same time, but can switch back and forth quickly, and will use the most favorable mode at any given time. (This seems like a big cheat to me, as I don't see how they would know they need to start pinging before you even make a sound.) I believe they can only ping forward, though (no rotating). This is hardcoded behavior. Ducimus has written a lot about the games AI, if you can find it.

Ducimus just released his TMO 2.2 version, BTW.

Others can probably explain the AI tactics better than I can. :DL
