Type XXI Question

Just for kicks, I up-graded to the type 21 sub. Leaving port at flank speed, I can squeeze out 16 knts.

But shortly after leaving port, and upon entering the ocean, I am detected by Wellington or B-24's.

Crash dive to 70 meters.

Cruise at 7 knts for one hour, surface and order flank speed.

Once I have submerged, there goes the 16 knts.

The best I can squeexe out is 12-13 knts.

Is this normal?

Is this a bug?

Batteries recharging mebe?

Best regards.

Perfectly normal depending on sea state. 16 kn is correct for glassy seas, 12 - 13 is right for heavier seas.

The XXI is faster submerged than surfaced. At every bell, iirc.

The XXI was designed with a whole slough of advancements over previous designs, surfaced speed wasn't one of them.

And, as Fubar mentioned, charging the batteries slows the boat a bit.

Hi Sandman !

Please read carefully: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/German_Type_XXI_submarine

Especially on the right side under "Speed" !

Best regards,

Thank you but I already know this.

From the wiki:

Quote:

Speed:Surfaced:
15.6 kn (28.9 km/h) (diesel)
17.9 kn (33.2 km/h) (electric)
Submerged:
17.2 kn (31.9 km/h) (electric)
6.1 kn (11.3 km/h) (silent running motors)
That still does not explain why when resurfacing speed will not return to 16 knts.

Your running on one diesel on surface while the other diesel is relegated to recharging the batteries.Try telling the CO for standard propulsion and you'll see 16kts again.Whats wrong is that you must say this to the CO as it never switches back to standard....at least on my game.I was wondering for awhile why my fuel would drop so rapidly running at ahead slow.

By "on my game" do you mean in general, or just with the Type XXI? Because in all the other types (I've never played a XXI) I've never had to tell the chief to do anything like that, when the batteries are fully charged we just go back to both diesels propelling the boat automatically with the expected increase in speed.

Rgr that.

One possibility not yet mentioned:

Sabotage and Malfunctions 'SH3 Commander'...but highly unlikely.

That would've been my first thought if recharging batteries or rough weather are ruled out as possibilities.

But now I'm curious as to whether Wolfstriked's having his issue with just the XXI or all types. :hmmm:
