Sound problems with GWX 3.0

Good day,
I recently purchased a copy of SH3 and I downloaded the GWX3 gold and everything seems to be working great except I am having some sound issues. When I am surfaced I can't hear the engines running nor can I hear waves crashing and other misc sounds. Then when I am submerged and inside the boat it seems very quiet and all I can hear is the crew noises such as whispering and pages turning, etc. When I am inside the boat I still can't hear the engines running. Basically having a problems with ambient sounds. For instance when I run the regular un-modded game, the engines are loud and ambient noise in the sub is present and outside the waves are crashing against the hull, etc, but not with GWX3 gold. This is all new to me as I am not really an experienced modder lol. Was just wondering if anyone else has this problem, or am I just crazy and it is supposed to be this way?? Please help! Thanks!

Welome Aboard Broncoman1980!

 I'm not 100 on what you mean, if I'll be honest, but I do not see too much different to what you have said, but here at SubSim there are resources for solutions, so look out ..

Sorry I don't have any suggestions for fixing the issue, but I can tell you that you're not crazy, you should be hearing more ambient sound, definitely you should hear sea/wind sounds up on the bridge, depending on the state of the weather of course.

WELCOME ABOARD! :sunny:

Unfortunately I haven't experienced that particular problem, so I'm not going to be much help either.

Hi Broncoman1980

You don't state what your sound setup is so I'll presume it's onboard (motherboard) and not a separate sound card.

Load the game and on the Options page choose Sound Settings...you'll notice four dials 'General, Music, FX and Speech'....these are all set by default to 0db.

Try upping the FX to say 20 and don't forget to 'Apply Changes', load the game and observe the change.

You can now tweak the others via trial and error to come to an acceptable level that is compatable with your systems sound settings.

update on sound problem

Yes I believe its an onboard sound setup as I have no other sound cards or etc. I tried adjusting the sound setting like you said jimbuna but they only go from
-40db to 0db on mine. (well I uninstalled and reinstalled without the GWX yet.) I am thinking about maybe copying some of the sound files from the unmodded version before I install the GWX and maybe copying some original sound files into the xpansion. Not really sure how that will work lol. But yea basically all sound works fine except the engine sounds and some ambient sounds inside and outside the sub(sea crashing, waves, etc.) :damn: Voices work great, torpedo firing, ship explosions, etc. all work pretty good. I turned the FX volume up pretty loud and my speakers and I think I could hear a faint engine noise, but it doesn't seem very loud at all. Were real u-boats really this silent? I figured they would sound like the do before the GWX is installed and all clattery and loud. Thanks for the info and I will keep you updated.

I realize it's a bit of a workaround, but you could always try running the effected 'ambience' sound files through a program like Audacity and simply amp them up.

Not the ideal solution by any means, but it might be less time consuming than multiple re-installs.

Rgr that matey...sorry it didn't work for you but it looks like it's your system.

You could always try the above method I suppose but it's really down to how much you want to put into the effort.

That's a good possibility. I never bothered to upgrade my onboard sound until the speaker connection got broken and left me with a constant hum. For less than $30 I picked up a cheap sound card. It plugged right in and suddenly the whole world was different. You'd be surprised what a real card can do.

Yeah always been a bit of a puzzler for me that a cheap sound card out performs onboard...makes me wonder how much of the motherboard cost is invested in the sound technology...not much I suspect :hmmm:
