so much fog
 
i miss the nice cloud formations and ever changing sky. Now all i get is brownish orange sheet of fog always its very tedious. Fog has been Meduim for for 2 weeks. Does anyone know a setting that may reduce the medium fog so its not so dense, but still present? Could this be a video driver issue. I use Radeon HD 5770. I use sober and stoainm's fog mechanics 16, but the fog is the same no mateer what mod I try. I would like to edit the fog distances cfg file, but not sure what the settings do. thanks:salute:

About fog... I would like to appeal to people who are really deep into environmental modding. Amount of foggy days/nights in this game is ridiculous and have nothing to do with reality. In real world fog is very rare in open ocean or sea and happens when air above the water surface is suddenly cools down a lot (like sudden move of cold front in atmosphere). Not to mention it usually happens in early morning hours and does not last past noon.
Sorry but it got under my skin especially when I had to sink billions of tons of specific ships in North Atlantic in winter 1940/41 and my most common weather reports were: " Clouds overcast, participation heavy, fog heavy, wind 15m/sec". And I had to find tankers in conditions like this. I don't mind if it last couple of days. But it lasted like 3 months and this is a total crap. I know what stormy weather is, North Atlantic and North Sea are pretty rough at early spring and late fall but not foggy. It takes warm water and cold air for that. I would like to take people who come up with the idea of fog amount in this game to somewhere where convoy routes are, drop them into the water in late October and let them speak about how warm water is and how cold is air. And then I would tell them that they are allowed back on ship only after fog will show up. :yeah:
I am more than sure they will not make it back home.:|\\

Anyway.. If time space in game equally divided as follows:
25% no fog
25% light fog
25% medium fog
25% heavy fog
Guess what? We spend 75% with some kind of fog. And this is as far from reality as possible. I've spend some time at sea. I've seen fog only in early morning hours in English Channel and off the coast of Corsica/ Sardinia in Mediterranian. And it never lasted more than 4-6 hours. No way it lasted days after days like in this game.

I would say for reality sake it should be redistributed (if it is possible) following way:

40% - absolutely clear (no fog).
30% - little haze, that happens often enough to consider (light fog).
20% - medium fog.
10% - heavy fog.

Region does not matter much.

Another thing - in reality it is raining more often than in the game :DL.
But let's fix that fog thing first, please.

The ''fog'' problem it is a game bug... it is hardcoded in game and i do not know how to control the randon weather type that game give in game... i tryied to reduce first this problem when i made the stoianm weather mod and i tryied also in the dynamic envirnment mod v2.1... i tested the dynamic environment sh5 v2.1 and i noticed that there are not so manny fog days in row now.... also we can to make the fog not so ''strong'' but this will be unrealistic and will have side efects on irai also... you will be able to see the ships but they will react like they do not see you.... so in my opinion the problem with the ''to manny days with fog''' can be solved but by somebody that have good programing skills.... somebody did something like this in sh3... i recomand to read this thread to understand better:

In SH3, h.sie made a mod that control the weather random factor... so if somebody can do something like this for sh5 he can read this thread:

I notice there is a sky min/max and also a cloudsrelative min/max im wondering what these do?:salute:

fog at sea level looks good as it softens the horizon, its just the skies look flat and never vary when there is medium fog.

You can try to play with those numbers... but will be unrealistic also... on the sea level you will have no visibility and on the sky it will be like no fog:)

The fog itself is also hardcoded? If someone can find a way to remove completely the fog from the game, should get the oscar for modding. The fog already casing me nightmares, every time I get into the game.. there is fog :damn:

Hi sober, that link is dead, but is it pointing to your reduced fog mod? I will give that a try, sounds promising! Thanks alot :salute:

I notice this mod affects the fog distance file, would this have the unrealistic affect that stoian is talking about?

Hi all!

I also think that the fog is really annoying. Usually almost half of the patrol goes in some sort of fog. If I save the game in nice clear weather, and continue it later, it almost everytime changes back to fog that stays for a week or so. To make it worse, the fog effect is ugly looking, we have amazing graphics, (thanks again stoainm, Gap, sober, w_clear and others for enviro mods) but the fog kind of ruins it.

I think that I will also try sober's reduced fog (when I find it). No fog at all is much better than fog all the time. I hope that somebody will someday look into this and explore fix the exe-file.
