Silent Hunter III to V and steam

Hi guys, been a while.

Been lurking for some time but the let's play brought me back here. I am LOVING it. I think the host is a hoot. I also like how he is starting from the ground up too, makes it a real immersion of the game experience.

Moving on. I have played Silent hunter III with the Grey wolves expansion. I hear of this Magnums Opus super mod and I was wondering if mods will work on a steam client. Also, as to the immersion, in Silent hunter V you can now mingle with the crew and give orders. I have some concerns such as is there any devlopment of the role playing aspect for this? IE are there significant developing story lines for the crew like the commander mode for silent hunter III? Could you have a poltical officer on board or get into a potential mutiny with the crew? Are the side missions exciting? Do you get to insert 5th collum spies in the US and get to talk to them on the way over?

The meat and potatoes of the sub sims (the mechanics) I think the game has long since pretty much nailed down so it the potential for a good story that interests me. Is that something this game can do?

I know my system can handle the game and I may look into the amazon direct download as well but I suspect steam will have a sale soon enough and having all my games in one cloud that I can download and uninstall without having to worry about lost disks or hardware failure is a real plumb. I will still love Grey wolves but it does require a ton of work to get it up and it will always be hampered by the engine itself. Silent Hunter V after a year of polish and mods may at last be something worth picking up.

Thanks all in advance and good hunting!

bump!

What I really want to know is how steam and the mods are going to work. Is there a list of mods that will not work with steam?

I can't use Steam myself, but I'm pretty sure most mods work with it. Don't worry, someone who knows what's what will be along sooner or later to help you out.

Meanwhile, WELCOME ABOARD! :sunny:

Hi Scape, I don't think there is any restriction with using Steam and mods. I have the Steam version and run Magnum Opus and a few other mods. Before Magnum Opus, I was running the 20 -30 mods that are in MO individually also with no problems. Steam shouldn't present you with any issues in this regard. I use JSGME by the way and recommend it if you don't have it. Basically a must for using the mods. The mods are definately what makes this game great.

I haven't read or followed the lets play, but if you are just starting out follow the steps in the stickied thread on "How to Start a Campaign" Basically you start your first campaign with no mods enabled so you can complete the tutorial, then you can add mods and start a new campaign or continue with that one, etc.

Anyone using a Mac?

I am playing SH 3 & 4 on a Mac via Steam & Crossover Games. Does anyone know how to use Mods with this setup? I can copy the files directly but it is rather tedious for the larger mods. JSGME is a windows program so I am not sure how to get that to work.

Replacing the entire data file would be an easier proposition than copying 1400 files individually. The other alternative is to figure out how to use JSGME with Crossover games.

Any Mac users that have figured this out?

Thanks!

AFAIK Steam shouldn't cause issues with the majority of mods - however you won't be able to use TDW's .exe patcher to fix the hydrophone or alter the annoying TAI map colours as Steam checks the .exe file at launch.

Steam in general is a very decent platform, however there is one thing - it's often more expensive. At the moment, you can get Silent Hunter 5 for about a fiver on amazon.co.uk - if you buy it on steam you'll pay three times that, even in a Steam sale (was in one recently for £15ish iirc). :D

If you can go disc for SH5, do. :salute:

EDIT: Don't know Macs, sorry Scandiman!

I don't have SH5 with Steam as I use physical discs, but mods seem to work fine with all of my other Steam games, such as Warband, New Vegas, ETW and others. I can't see why SH5 would be any different.

Thanks for the replies

I appreciate the kind replies from this forum & have been able to get several Mods to work the Mac version of Steam. What it generally require is copying the files into the Steam SH4 data file. W/O JSME it can be a tedious project. If a mod doesn't work, I just reinstall the game via steam.

My next challenge is the TMO 2.2 overhaul. It will be a bear to copy those files individually, but I see no other way atm.

It is really tempting to buy a PC just to play this game!

For other Mac users out there, Steam (via Crossover games) runs SH III & IV very well. SH5 is not operational at this point.

Again, thanks to everyone & it is great to be a part of the community.
