Spotting and spotting ranges?

Hello

I am new to the SH series and SH5 is my first sub sim game since having last played Aces of the Deep ages ago.

Some people may say its good that I only get to see SH5 and not the others in the series because I would probably end up a whining about how bad/different/disappointing SH5 is compared to the others.

Anyways I got a few basic questions I know you can help me with.
I understand that the map shows ranges around enemy ships and these indicate "detection" ranges.

Grey = visual?
Yellow = hydrophones
Red = depth charges?

1. Is visual detection "automatic" if you are within the grey range of an enemy ship, or is it based on probability?

2. Is it possible to manually spot enemy ships (say through binoculars) before your own crew do? Once you spot them, is there a way to ensure they spot and track them as well?

Cheers

GS

Here is what the various colours mean:

Grey = visual, will be detected shortly after entering the circle
Yellow = hydrophones
Red = sonar
