"Ship spotted" text missing

I suddenly have a strange bug. This is a little long, but it's hard to explain, sorry.

Now, when my watch officer sees a ship, he'll yell "Ship spotted!" (in German ofc!), but he doesn't say the bearing, and no text at all will appear in the dialogue box. This is an issue, because without the bearing, I have no way of telling whether he's simply reacquired the same ship, or a new one has appeared, bar hopping on deck and searching myself (not always the most expedient thing to do). If I ask for the nearest visual contact, only the bearing text appears, no distance.

It just started happening after I ran SH3Gen on this save for the first time, but since that just reads data from the game, then writes it on the save's navmap and log, I don't see how it could cause this.

I tried changing officers, and submerging and resurfacing, but it didn't help. I made a new career and loaded it, and it worked fine. I then ran SH3Gen on that save, and the problem didn't recur. But then again, it didn't seem to happen right away the previous time.

The only other change I remember making was adding the OLC Gold Flat Sun Fix, but I took it off right away because it didn't seem to do anything. (I didn't think I needed it, was just experimenting.)

Another thing, and this might be a really stupid question, I was wondering if the CO ever changed position. At the same time I noticed the text not appearing, I realized he was, instead of standing right in front of me in the command room, slightly to the left, facing to the right, between the two seated guys (type VII), with his left hand in one guy's back. When I loaded the new career (type II), the CO was facing the same way.

What I'm running (via Commander):

GWX
GWX Axis Mediterranean a/c skins
GWX English Nav Map
GWX Main Movie Das Boot ('cause it's friggin Das Boot!:ping:)
OLC Gold MkII ~ Option 4
OLC Gold MkII Update
ACM Reloaded for OLC Gold MkII
ACM Lite Map
TMT v2
GWX3-WB News Network
GWX Captain America's Officer Icons

That stuff all seemed to work fine, it was only after SH3Gen and the flat sun fix that this happened, though of course correlation doesn't necessarily imply causality.

Any ideas?

I'm not sure if this will work but you can try checking your data\menu\en_menu.txt file to make sure it is correct. (Or which ever language you use). String 4616 should read like this for your watch officer to give you a bearing:

4616=Nearest visual contact at bearing %03.0f!

or like this if you want a bearing and a distance also:

4616=Nearest visual contact at bearing %03.0f, range %.0f meters!

I'm afraid I can't think of anything else, but no doubt someone on here will probably give you the answer if this doesn't help you.

Take the Gen and flat sun bits out and see if that rectifies the problem.

If it does then it's a case of trial and error with the remainder of your installed mods I'm afraid, until you can distinguish where the clash is.

thebigJ_A 04-17-11 05:36 AM

Strange. The second part of that line was missing. How did that happen?

I don't have time to load up the game right now, but something is changing that, else I wouldn't have been getting the range in my other campaign. Hmm.

Now I'm wondering what else might be messed up.

The only one solution to finding out is to disable all mods. Then enable one by one all mods and note which are replacing this specific file. Depending on your language settings (german vs. english text option) this may also be data\menu\de_menu.txt.

Then knowing which mod replaces those files you analyse these differences between the mods.

thebigJ_A 04-17-11 11:49 PM

Oh, now I've gone and done it. I tried pulling out all the mods, then putting them back in and starting a new campaign to see if that might work. It didn't, and somehow now the green bars above the Sub's compartments are always blank(i.e. not green). Starting a new campaign doesn't help.
So, I took all the mods off my SH GWX install, again, and started adding one by one to find out which thing was doing it. It didn't take long. The very first mod, OLC Gold MkII (the one I need the most). OLC worked fine before! How did it just suddenly not work? And all by itself with nothing to conflict with! :nope:

I've removed SH3Gen, even though I can't see how that had anything to do with it. It is only supposed to affect a single save. But the only thing I can think of is that it changed something, causing all these other weird issues. Of course removing it doesn't actually fix anything...

Now I have no idea what to do. :damn:

thebigJ_A 04-18-11 12:36 AM

And for added weirdness, "GWX Nav Map and Grid Refs" no longer does anything (which makes me wonder if any of the other mods aren't working, too), and all the switches and buttons (in the TDC and periscopes, for instance) are in German suddenly... for some reason.

I'm beginning to suspect I'm going to have to completely wipe SH3 and everything related to it from my hard drive and do a complete reinstall.

A few pointers:

If you pick the longer repair times option for OLC one of the side effects is the removal of the green bars, that's normal. You have to use an option that doesn't include LRT if you want to see them.

I just remembered that it is actually ACM reloaded that alters your 1WO in the x_menu.txt files. If you want to see range aswell as bearing from your watch officer you'll have to manually edit the sting back yourself after you've installed all the mods you want to use that can effect that file. I think the mod's author felt the range request was too accurate for his taste or something like that. However you should always get a bearing with this mod even if you leave those files alone.

If you use SH3 Commander make sure you roll it back everytime before enabling or disabling mods, as failing to do this can sometimes cause JSGME to not
not remove/replace the game files properly. Perhaps this was the cause of your problems? Either that or SH3 Gen did something to your install, I'm not sure as I never have used it. Setting SH3 Commander to rollback automatically on exit is a good thing to do.

The list of mods you have displayed on your first post should work fine together in the order you have written. I can't see any reason why they would cause problematic conflicts.

Then that's even stranger. I was using option 4, with LRT, all along. Ditto with ACM. So in reality, what I was used to wasn't right.

Here's my theory.
It's entirely possible something got messed up from not rolling back. I didhave it set to automatically roll-back, but my pc has crashed a couple of times (unrelated issues), so maybe it failed to do so.

Then, I installed SH3Gen, which may or may not have caused a problem, but I did install that sun-fix mid patrol. I've since read that the game doesn't like that. Maybe it's what caused my lookout to not speak properly. So, I monkeyed with the mods, this time rolling back. This perhaps "fixed" the two things that I was unaware of (green line not supposed to be there, range not supposed to be told). I then took those to be yet more problems. I guess things aren't as bad as I thought.

I've deleted all my saves, and loaded OLC Option 3 w/o LRT (why would the lines denoting a compartment's efficiency be taken away in a mod affecting repair time?). So far it seems ok, except that the English Nav Map mod doesn't work, and the boat's controls are all in German. The map I have sufficient geographical knowledge to deal with, but a mod that should work having no effect is troubling. I wish i knew how to turn those buttons back to English, too.

King_Zog 04-18-11 03:14 AM

Well, it's a German boat so you might aswell have German labels on your controls no? :D

edit: If you really need English labels try making a post in the ACM Reloaded thread asking for advice... (I think it is ACM reloaded which makes those changes) mine have always been in German anyway but I have seen pictures and video of people using this mod with all its features except for the labels still appearing in English, and I gather you've had them in English before. So there must be a way to get them back.

thebigJ_A 04-18-11 07:13 AM

Yeah, they were English until this happened. It isn't a big deal. I know what it all does now, and I suppose it is more immersive.

I just want to know why the map mod doesn't work. If it doesn't, I can't be sure something doesn't either. Unfortunately I can't open the .raw image of the map in my image software for some reason, so I can't check and see if it's actually replacing it.

Whatever. I'm going to just play. If something else goes wrong later, I deal with it then.

Thanks.

Pisces 04-18-11 07:15 AM

Just to make sure, what is the version of JSGME? It is the latest?

You may well find the faults begin to mount/stack up and CTD's will be the eventual outcome.

Fingers crossed it pans out for you and a reinstallation won't be required http://www.psionguild.org/forums/ima...s/thumbsup.gif

No, it's an old one. I don't even know what the latest version is. 2.6?

I didn't think it mattered, since most of these mods are years old.

I hope not, but we shall see. I take it that's a phenomenon common to the SH3 experience?

I've already had another weird experience. I noticed that, on this new campaign I've started, I only began with 500 renown. GWX is supposed to give you 1500. Again, not a big deal, I just ran through the tutorials again quickly (I can always use the practice) and i was up to 1500, but strange and slightly disconcerting.

...

I remember reading in one of the JSGME readme's or changelogs (years ago) that JScones fixed a JSGME bug that could potentially mix up your game-install. So I thought you might have been unlucky to have such a version. But I haven't got a clue which version this was. So don't take this as a given as the cause. But as a warning to keep yourself uptodate, and if nothing else is probable to do a re-install.
