Anyone running a ATI HD 6990?
I'm getting this in a couple of weeks' time.
This is one mean monster card! 2 cards, together, 1 slot! A massive 4GB memory, options for clock frequencies and TDP via a small micro switch on the card. 3072 shader processors, most top end GPU's count 1536 shader processors! The core clock is locked in at either 830 mhz or 880 mhz, unlocked. The memory is clocked at 5000 mhz. DX 11 ofc, 4 display port monitor connectors, with a crossfire connector, which opens up 2 of these cards running! Yep, in theory, 4 cards, 2 slots, an 8BG monster, sitting under the hood. System in idle consumes 195 W, (All in default mode), System in full stress-489 W. Price on eBay is $800 AU. Can probably get it cheaper, am window-shopping atm. My mouth is watering. Edit: yes, i will be running this in dual monitor set-up. This card is simply not designed for single monitor set-up. A waste of power using it with a single monitor. |
Nah - it's a stinker! http://i189.photobucket.com/albums/z...es/grinser.gif
But you can always slap another one in, once you realise just how slow it is... Hope you've measured your case? or at least have a powergrinder standing by! It's really, really, really big! A nice test here: http://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/ASUS/Radeon_HD_6990/ Quote:
And careful with that mouth watering. :shifty: |

Ranked highest amongst ATI's, sure, behind the GeForce 400 and 500's, but that's ok, i stick with ATI. Edit: after some benchmarking research the only card that seems to outdo it is the ATI 6970 (ATI only ofc). Cracking 60 fps in Crysis, perfect! Quote:

It beats the crap out of everything! And with superior image quality too! http://tpucdn.com/reviews/ASUS/Radeo...rfrel_1920.gif Except in power consumption. Pleased to see my old 4870x2 still holds the throne! :smug: http://tpucdn.com/reviews/ASUS/Radeo...er_maximum.gif |

:rotfl2: Question, though: Why is the 5870 better than the 6870? Likewise the 5970 vs the 6970? |
The 6870 is a refreshed version of the 5770...the 6900 series were the refreshes for the 5800 series parts.

Right, some points about dual-GPU:
Good performance in one game doesn't gaurantee it in another. Some games work well with SLI/Crossfire, some don't. New games can not work at all (only use 1 GPU) untill the next driver update. 4GB memory means you have 2GB effectively. Each GPU uses it's own 2GB, with data cloned on the 2 sets. (not that you will fall short with 2GB, but it should be noted) Oh, and the GTX590 beats everything hands down. :O: (unless you care about the power bill) |

I did mention that i may run a 'twin' 6990, so point noted. Quote:

So it's TWO <clap> TWO <clap> Two cards in one!

Indeed. :haha:
Love those old commercials. At least they took the time to deliver the message, not like the 15-30sec flashes we get nowadays. :) |
The only thing that may persuade me to get this card is the fact that when she 'arks' up, ie a bit of load is put on the card (can't think of anything that would do that tbh, it runs Crysis at 60 fps), that the card sounds like a hair dryer!
I don't like hair dryers in my case! |

My crappy cards.... but with great coolers! http://i189.photobucket.com/albums/z.../Indahouse.jpg Ultrasilent and ultra efficient! Arctic haven't however released one for the 6990 yet, but it won't be long. Keep an eye out for them! Or go for water cooling... And have a looksie here! http://www.overclock3d.net/reviews/g...sfire_review/2 |
Nice link, Jan and yea, will look into the coolers.
The only thing i'm thinking though, and correct me if i am wrong but, the cooling fans may be super quiet and certainly keep the heat down, however they wouldn't keep the card quiet though. Cooling and quiet cooling at that is dandy ofc but, the card itself will still be a hair dryer :hmmm: |
I'm sorry, but now you lost me!?
What do you mean the "card" isn't quiet? AFAIK the card itself certainly does not make any noises, only the fan will. Especially the stock ones... :nope: But these Arctic Coolers are indeed noiseless! Or very, very close to be... Even when running card under full load! Just one review of the 5970 version: http://www.xbitlabs.com/articles/coo...0_5.html#sect2 /edit: Found some shots from my rebuild! http://i189.photobucket.com/albums/z...s/biggrin3.gif Triple eleven-blade fans versus stock... http://i189.photobucket.com/albums/z...sktop/L033.jpg Side shot - note the mixture of cooling pipes and radiator: http://i189.photobucket.com/albums/z...sktop/L034.jpg |
