Is this water around my feet?
Ok, so I wandered a little clsoe to the boat as it exploded, I get that. My bad.
I take some dmage and some crewmen are injured. Watch officer took a pieece of shrapnel to the head and died instantly Hydrophone reciever torn clean off. Shockwaves from an underwater demolition causes some damage below, and the petty officer in the electrics room falls and knocks his head. I also have some minor flooding in the bow quarters. I can live with that, it's not serious and the damage control team can fix it. I decide to head home for repairs and hospital for my injured men... 4 days later- 4 DAYS! I get 'we have heavy flooding sir'. The leak still isn't fixed. The bow quarters (and there only, torpedo room is fine) is now 3.4 full. Boat still floats on the water, but I change course to a neutral norweigen whaling station just in case. Halfway there (and anout 36 hours later), i get 'ship destroyed by flooding' - we didn't SINK Oh no. The bow quaters just filled up. How The Hell did this happen? A leak that takes 5 and a half DAYS to flood should be fixed by damage control, no? Or are my whole CREW scared of water? Fatigue modelling is offf, so that can't be the issue. And how does the ship sink from flooding if it DOESN'T sink! Is there a mod that fixes this? I had a career end of similar issues a few weeks ago - depth charge caused it and it took 2 days to flood and 'sink' us (still being on the surface' but otherwise same issue. Halp? |
How intact is the hull, and is the major damage, :hmmm:

Go to your damage control screen.
If a compartment is flooding, you will have two timers. The one on the right is how long until the compartment is flooded. The one on the left is how long until your pumps get ahead of the flooding. Also as it floods, the compartment will fill with water on the DC screen. If there are crew in the compartment, they will attempt to fix the damage, unless you are at silent running which stops all repairs. If you want to accelerate the repairs, assign crew to the Damage Control team. But you have to tell them which compartment to repair. Also work stops while at silent running. If the compartment is flooding you probably don't have crew working to repair it. |

Bow and stern quarters will not repair even if you have crewmen in them - the crewmen seem happy to lie in their bunks while the quarters fill up with water.
The only way to fix either bow or stern quarters is to assign crewmen to damage control and click on the relevant quarters to repair it. |

Just move them all to the DC team and make them help, I guess. :hmmm: |
One of the first things I do when training up officers is get officers trained in repair.
When you are damaged at depth, getting those leaked stopped fast is the top priority. You should be able to "green out" your repair team easily. Ultimately, I carry 4 repair petty officers and a repair-rated officer. They alone can green out the DC bar. |

When you get jammed up, what good are those flak gunners? Not much. |
Yep, when I start handing out qualifications anybody who isn't going to be needed constantly for other duties gets the Repair qual. It pays to have some crew who are dedicated just to that function if possible. And they're always assigned to that "station" any time we're about to see action.
That way if they're needed, it's just a matter of clicking to get them started on something, and not trying to transfer dudes in there in the middle of whatever else is going on. The one thing that always used to get me was the silent running thing, I'd forget about it and wonder why nobody was working on plugging all those darn holes in the boat. "But you told us to be quiet, Herr Kaleun!" :haha:  |

What's the worst that could happen? End up with a water bed? ;) |

My LI is always qualified as both Repair and Machinist, I don't know which one the game (or Commander) gives him automatically but I don't think it's both. It doesn't make sense to me that he wouldn't be qualified in both, so he gets both as soon as we finish the first patrol and I hit up Crew Management in Commander. Plus I've gotten into the habit of picking up an extra engineering "officer in training" who gets qualified for Repair at the very least, he's usually the one who gets assigned to the DC team. By the time the LI is ready for promotion off the boat, the trainee is usually in a fairly good position to take over for him and I can pick up a new trainee. Along with the dedicated Repair POs I've usually got, plus any extra warm bodies from among the Matrosen, I can keep the DC compartment in good shape and ready for a crisis. And if things get really bad, I can send my LI to take over DC and put the trainee in the control room instead. It doesn't seem to affect things too much in the control room, but DC gets a boost. And for me any PO who is on the Engineering "track" in his career, can rate either Machinist or Repair - so if my engine/motor compartments are in pretty good shape with the Machinist POs I've got, any "extra" engineering dudes might as well have Repair instead. I can move them around in a crisis if necessary without taking anything away from the dedicated DC team. |
Lessons to be learned....obviously :O:
