Cool! I was had not heard of the holiday either.

Betonov 03-18-11 03:14 AM

The evacuation of an ocupational force is a big event for a nation gaining independence. We have a similar event on the 25th and 26th october when the last troops of the Yugoslav army were evacuated from Slovenia.

So, how do you celebrate, pick some poor buggers, dress them in red and kick them towards city limits ?? :DL

Never thought there´s a celebration or holiday of an evacuation...

Maybe there´s an evacuation holiday week in far future? From 26th May to 3rd June... (Dunkirk 1940) :D (sorry couldnt resist)

You just had to bring it up......were trying to forget that day:nope:.

PhantomLord 03-18-11 05:35 AM

Sorry... i dont wanted to bring such feelings up. It was a flash in my mind that forces me to write this without thinking about. :(

I deeply respect the bad feelings about this time and ask pardon for touching this sore spot.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Evacuation_Day_(New_York)

although it should really be called "Day when Her Majesty's Royal Army was kind enough to leave on their own accord" :D

nikimcbee 03-18-11 12:28 PM

Your welcome August. So did you get a day off?

On a side note, too bad Jim and Steed didn't make it to the last subsim meeting. We were going to have a special ceremony for you.:O::D

The 11-month siege of Boston ended when the Continental Army, under the command of George Washington, fortified Dorchester Heights in early March 1776 with cannonscaptured at Ticonderoga. British General William Howe, whose garrison and navy were threatened by these positions, was forced to decide between attack and retreat. To prevent what could have been a repeat of the Battle of Bunker Hill, Howe decided to retreat, withdrawing from Boston to Nova Scotia on March 17.
And McBee's fought in that Battle.

We checked it out at the last meet (a quick hike to Bunker Hill)
