What (if anything) did you give up for Lent?
Last week my wife "suggested" that I give up ice cream for Lent.
Her children, too, thought that my giving up ice cream for Lent was a good idea. Consequently, I have given up ice cream for Lent. This is how democracy works. What about y'all? (Understanding, of course, that Lent is something that only some of "y'all" observe.) |
I live on an island with only 400 people. Mostly all United Methodist and believe it or not there's one break away group down the block. I am friends with everyone here yet I do not attend either. I think I missed this Lent ritual because I went to the doctors that day.
Which is fine by me because I really really like my Klondike Bars and all of the sweet chocolaty fatty goodness. :DL |

What the heck is Lent? :O:
|
For those unfamiliar, It is the period extending from Ash Wednesday (Yesterday) through to the Saturday immediately before Easter.
During this time period it is common to "sacrifice" something for this period. Some people give up drinking, eating ice cream or certain meats, or in Dowly's case... fapping etc. |
What the heck is Ash Wednesday ? :O:
(Edit: Yes i know these are Catholic things, i'm just being a smart ass) |
I gave up tea.

Sex!
....oh wait, I gave that up after we had kids. Ummmmm....I'll get back to you on that. Seriously though-I didn't give anything up. I'm making it a point to read one of the 4 Gospels from the Bible. :) |
This topic birngs to my mind my early days of childhood spent in Catholic school. From kindergarten to 8th grade (roughly age 14 years), whenever Lent came around we were required to specify what we were giving up for the Lenten period. On top of specifying our "sacrifice" we were also graded by the nuns on our adherance to our pledge. A rather large number of my classmates, including myself, wracked our brains to figure out a pledge that would satisfy the nuns criteria with minimal impact to ourselves. As I remember, the pledges were "honored" more in breach than observance. I am currently what is referred to a "lapsed Catholic", which seems to imply my license has expired. I am rather glad to be done with all the ritual and observances, but if I had to chose now I would give up sacrificing.
