Best Patrols Ever

Hi folks, I've been lurking the forums since forever, great stuff all. I think I just had the 2 best patrols ever and I'm curious as to what some of yours were/are.

First patrol, Type IIA Boat;
Completed my patrol with no activity then sailed by Hartlepool. Sank a destroyer and chased a Small Merchant into the harbor itself. Sank 2 more merchants while at their docks and as I ran out of Eels, my prayers were answered and a squadron of Ju-88's came out of the sky and demolished the remaining ships in the harbor, including the addition destroyer that was coming to try and rescue the harbor.

Next patrol, Type VIIB Boat;
Was en route to my patrol zone off the coast of Ireland when I ran into my first convoy. Since its only May 1940, the escorts were light (I'm assuming they get a lot harder). As I approached the convoy, the trailing Destroyer escort picked me up and was at full steam to my boat. Shot off 2 Eels at him head on and sunk him (boat 1), then the other escort from the front of the convoy came full steam at me. To my surprise, it was a armed trawler, no depth charges on board. He steamed over my head without detecting me and I lined up the Aft tube and sank him (boat 2). Then went crazy on the convoy. Caught up with the convoy, sank a Coastal Merchant (boat 3), T2 Tanker (boat 4), surfaced the boat and sank another T2 Tanker with torpedoes and a C2 Cargo with the deck gun (boats 5 and 6). While torpedoes were reloading, sank another Small Merchant with the deck gun (boat 7). Remaining forward torpedoes reloaded, took out another T2 Tanker (boat 8). Now out of forward torpedoes, out of 88 mm AP rounds, with on lone Aft torpedo left, lined up on the last big ship, a C2 Cargo and sent her to the bottom (boat 9). In total, on one patrol, 51,615 tons of English junk sent to the bottom.

These two patrols along with several other have now put me right behind Gunther Prien on my "Aces" list. He has 168K tons to my 138K tons. Yar!:arrgh!:

Congratulations! Nicely done. Especially with the Type II. I never had a patrol like that with a type II, but then again, most of the time I get a VII right away or after two patrols. I like a little challenge, but the type II just has too little of everything for my taste.
btw, your tactic on the convoy I use too (in early war). But on the other hand it annoys me that this can work; everytime a destroyer sees / hears you, he comes straight for you. Making it VERY easy to take him own with a single torpedo set to magnetic. Ridiculous actually; it comes at you in a straight line; if it zig-zagged just a tiny bit, it would make it a hell of a lot more difficult (and realistic) but this is the AI we'll have to deal with I guess.

That wasn't bashing, silly boy! Go ahead and say what you want. Just remember to say what level you're playing on.

I was a big fan of Sid Meier's Pirates. I once turned the entire Spanish Main into the English Main.

On level 3.

Level 4 kicked my tail, took my name, stomped me into the ground, put the remains through a meat grinder and fed me to all its friends for lunch.

I don't brag so much any more. :dead:

Most hardcore SH3 post of the year. :rock::haha:

My best patrol was one of my first. I was sailing just off the southeast of England when I came across a convoy. It was early morning, the skies were clear and the water was smooth. Once I'd identified all the ships I sent off a contact report and submerged for the attack. About half an hour later the Luftwaffe rolled in and started bombing the convoy. It was a beautiful sight to see bombs hitting the water, off in the distance at the head of the formation, in that early morning light and haze.

The Luftwaffe boys made two or three sorties that morning, and I honestly don't remember if I even fired a torpedo. It was just an awesome sight to take in. :)

I could say i sunk about 100 grt, with the XXI...with its flak guns...which i did. It was fun, but it was a mod.

Normaly, in a VIIC, ill get 4/5 ships, and, if the weather is down right terrible, i may not get a single ship in 5/6 patrols. Also, i play with 52ish% realism.

This sounds excruciatingly painful!

:up:

My best patrol was - i manage to spot ship once. But it appeared it was friendly vessel in my port. Ok now serious :D Only once above 100k and it was 160k+!

I had huge luck patroling western and southern Africa seas and found three Large Troop Transport (each 24k), and during 90% time of patrol had calm sea and good weather so i spent all torpedoes, all deck and almost all flak ammunition.

Beside that patrol, my average is about 50k until 1943, when that number went down to 30-40k. Playing on 74% realism :zzz:

I think I once managed to crank out about 25,000 tons, but it's been so long I don't remember for sure. My problem is that I've played war games for so many decades now I no longer care about winning so much as about recreating the feel of being there. I spend a lot of time looking at the harbors on the way out and in, and I tend to stay in my assigned patrol grid forever, even if I get nothing. I've actually had more than one totally dry patrol, and for some perverse reason I like it that way.

Back in my SH1 days I would take over the deck gun because I was so much better than the AI crew, and sink godawful unbelievable tonnage, but as I got old so did the thrill. The funny thing is that I don't use manual targetting, but still manage to miss a lot. Well, it is set for manual, but I'm using WE Assistance.

I'm weird. Sue me. :O:

Snestorm 03-06-11 05:33 AM

I guess I tend follow Steve on tonnage.
The more I play, and try to achieve realistic results, the lower my tonnage drops.
