That's a shame

What a biased subject you wrote.

Did you read what you posted, or do you rely on the fact that people read headlines, and not body text?

The article linked to states that the Speaker AND the Majority Leader of the Senate (Reid) decided together that Arlington was the more appropriate venue.

But Boehner spokesman Michael Steel said that no legislation has been blocked, and said that Boehner and Senate Majority Leader Reid decided that Arlington National Cemetery is a more appropriate venue.

You were saying?? :har:

But on Thursday, Rockefeller released a statement expressing disappointment that the legislation had been blocked by House Speaker John Boehner.
So a Republican spokesman is not to be believed, but a Democrat IS to be believed without question. Gotcha.

Hey, explain how it is that SENATOR Rockefeller was blocked in the HOUSE, exactly.

Oh, wait, there has been no bill introduced int he HOUSE yet, but one is apparently pending MONDAY.

Apparently Mr. Buckles' daughter is joining in: Last U.S. WWI vet's daughter urges Capitol honor

Personally, I have to ask: Why? Just because he was the last American WWI vet to die? Because he worked hard to ensure veterans' efforts are recognized? I mean no disrespect to Mr. Buckles and his service and sacrifices, but many other veterans made the same service and sacrifices, and many others worked to ensure veterans are given proper recognition and assistance.

I really do admire the man and his service, but is it any less honorable for him to be laid to rest at Arlington? (not that anyone is really saying that) BUT having said that, I am not against his casket being displayed in the Rotunda.

Anyway, I dunno, just my thoughts on it.

And was the second or third oldest WWI American vet also laid in State at the capitol? I don't think so.

Just because he was the last survivor does not necessarily make him a hero.

Now, if during his service he received medals of heroism, then I think he should be lain in state.

But to justify such an honour simply because he lived longer that the other vets? :nope:

Think of all the other heroes that have not been lain in state at the capitol.

I think the memorial they are planning at Arlington is quite sufficient.

Are people claiming that being honored at Arlington is no longer special?

I have no problem with having the last veteran of a war honored when he passes on. Buckles death does mark the final passing of a generation. We now live in a country where the Great War has passed beyond living memory. That is worth taking special note I'd think.

Which sort of reminds me - where's the National WW1 Memorial? There's a DC memorial to residents of the city, and Buckles was pulling for the repair, restoration, and national dedication of that memorial to all the US WW1 vets.

So I say the man should absolutely lie in the Rotunda in state, as a call to all Americans to remedy the situation and finish the last great cause he fought for.
