Need more firepower

Is there an option to order your crew to fire at enemy ship with deck and flak guns?

I know that flak gun main purpose is AA defense, but sometimes it would be very useful to have option, specialy after mid 1943 when u can arm yourself with flakvierling...

I used flaks sometimes against lone merchants when i was out of torpedoes (or target was not worth of it), or low on deck gun ammunition. I realized that flaks are useful for taking down enemy AA and deck gun too... so is there any mod or option to order you crew to fire from all guns at enemy ship?

Thank you! :salute:

For the deck gun, you have to order the Watch Officer to order "crew on deck" and then order him to have the deck gun manned, then order them to "fire at will." You give those orders by clicking on the WO icon and then successively clicking the appropriate icons assigned to his "station."

If you are using GWX, you will also need to go to the deck gun station yourself and click the HE shell icon to load the first round (the crew is hardwired to load AP ammo first, and in GWX there isn't any, so you have to load the first HE round by manning the gun yourself).

After that they should continue loading and firing at will at the designated target.

Or you can go into the Crew Management screen and double-click the deck gun "compartment" to assign men to the gun, and order them to fire at will. The bit about loading the first HE round yourself in GWX still applies.

Basically it's the same process for getting the flak gun manned and firing, but you don't have to go to the station yourself to get the party started.

IIRC correctly though the crew will only fire the flak gun at aircraft, I've shot up ships with it but I'm pretty sure I had to man it myself to do that.

Edit: on second reading I think you may be asking if it's possible to have both the deck gun and the flak gun manned simultaneously... my gut feeling is no, but I could very well be wrong as I don't remember trying it. I'm still thinking that even if you could a crewman will not fire the AA gun at a ship, only something airborne, and if so you'd have to man it yourself anyway even if you had crew at the deck gun firing that on their own.

Yes, i know that deck and gun can fire automatically (if manned before, and given order to fire at will), but flak will only look to fire at aircrafts, not on ships. I was looking for solution that all guns aboard fire at enemy ship (like they fire at you :D), bastards, they use every gun against you, even the AA, on the other side you can only use Deck (manned automaticaly by crew), and u can pick one flak gun and handle it manualy, others (if u have more like me on IXD2), will do nothing.

I think that you would have more chance against armored merchant shipping, or light armored warships if u can use all guns (in my case it would be 1 Deck gun, and 8x20mm flaks - 1 Flakvierling, 2 Flakzwilling)

Ah, well I have never changed out of my VIIB so I only have the two guns to worry about. Never thought about how it works with that much armament on deck. But it does seem a shame if you can't have them all firing at once if the target merits it.

Yes it specially shame when u see how enemy fire all his AA gun at you, and u can use only one (in that case - it would be Flakvierling :arrgh!:) - very powerfull 'little thing'

Why would you shell a target that can shoot back? Dive asap, before you lose that ability entirely.

AI Guns don't follow the same rules as your Sub Guns do.
An AI Gun classed in the sim file as AA will fire on damned near anything!
But an AA Gun on your Sub only fires on AirCraft unless manned by you.
That's just the way SH3 rolls I guess.

Night attacks! When u have element of surprise on your side. Closing at the rear of lone merchant, i usually man the deck gun - give order to crew to aim at their weapons, sit on flakvierling and fire at target at 1000-1500 m. With 5-10 seconds advantage, you can destroy it stern deck gun and AA guns (if she have it) by that time she cannot fire her aft deck gun cos u are positioned at her rear. I don't use this tactis often, but sometimes on smaller merchant's which don't have too much guns aboard, or use this against crippled ships and save one eel for the others. This would be probably suicide mission against two or more ships close to each other or attack against Troop Ships, Large Merchants and similar ones which had many guns aboard after 1943.

I asked this cos when i attack like this it would be very useful that i can open fire from other two flaks. I read somewhere that is possible, maybe not in SH3, maybe SH4 or SH5 - not sure... That's why i asked here :D

My current commander has cured his "sore throat" already, so his goal right now is to get through the war in one piece in order to spend rest of his life on sunny beaches of South America. He's only sinking enough ships not to get transferred to some desk job (He still needs his boat for a daring escape in 1945).

No risk ---> Happy retirement in Argentina!

Just wondering, If AI guns don't have the same restrictions etc of your guns, and can fire AA at the uboat, is there a way to use the AI file to apply to your own sub's guns somehow? (I'm not a modder, so wouldn't know :P )

And yes, you can man the deck and Flak guns simultaneously.

Flak gun against patrol boats

Patrol boats are rather annoying, as you cannot torpedo them and they would force you to dive.
I used the AA machine gun against one of them and sank it with 4 or 5 bursts.
Obviuosly your Watch Officer has to order to man the Flak gun an then you have to go to manual mode using the F9 key.

Just try and enjoy the result.
