Newbie Advice

So i just got this game,
(Its installing)
And i have a question

Should i play vanilla for a bit and get a feel for the game or should I download GWX & Commander before i even start?

U777 02-25-11 06:08 PM

Get GWX and SH commander right off the bat, but if you want to experience a before/after picture then play the game for a mission or two before installing GWX.

Okay so can someone step-by-step for me on how to install GWX?
I have windows 7 and it is running on steam.

I would do exactly one mission on vanilla. That way you can see what an awesome piece of work they did on GWX 3.0 :)
Installing GWX is pretty straightforward, but it's quite a big download. I believe Jimbuna (you can find his posts all over this forum) has a link to GWX in his signature. Or else check the 'downloads' link above this forum. Be sure to download the latest patch for Sh3 too (1.4b) and
Also be sure to get JSGME (although I believe it's already part of the GWX download, not sure though). It's a really handy program that reduces activating mods to a simple drag and drop.

*edit* Since I'm bored, I did the searching for you: http://www.gamefront.com/files/user/JimbunaGWX2
You can choose there; mulit-part download or torrent.
When you're gonna download SH3 Commander (you should, everybody uses it :) ) you need these config files for it to work with GWX 3.0:

I know i have his link opend know but theres 1000 things here to download and idk what is what and even if i did idk where to put them in my files.
Im reaalllyy bad at this >.>

Bakkels 02-25-11 06:47 PM

Okay, ehrr, first question; are you familiar with torrents? That would make it a lot easier to download (and for me to explain it ;) )

Collin Dougherty 02-25-11 06:51 PM

Well, yes & no.
I have Utorrent but i never used it.

Collin Dougherty 02-25-11 06:53 PM

Okay i have it on Utorrent. Its downloading and taking a long time.
like 0.1 a second...

Bakkels 02-25-11 07:00 PM

Okay, I use Utorrent too. Try downloading the little GWX_Torrent.torrent file from the link I gave you. Open it, and UTorrent should immediately pop up. Click 'ok' and it should start downloading. I tried it and there are quite a few people sharing the file so it should download at a pretty high speed. But it's a 1.33 Gig file so it'll still take a while.

One thing though: Check the bottom (right? not sure) of the Utorrent window. It SHOULD have a little green circle with a check mark in it. If you keep seeing a yellow triangle with an exclamation mark that means something is wrong with your Utorrent settings. If that happens let me know.

If not; you now have GWX
I don't have the original installation file, and my memory isn't that good, so for installing it: http://www.thegreywolves.com/support/

Good luck

when its done downloading it will just put itself into my game files? no extraction or anything?

Bakkels 02-25-11 07:13 PM

Whoops, I was to busy typing my answer so I missed your posts.
Seems like downloading will be the bigger problem. Because the file itself is just like any software; self extracting/installing. Just double-click and assign it to a folder. Just putting it in you SH3 folders won't cut it though. Just double click the file you downloaded, it will ask where you want GWX3 to be installed, and IIRC it will ask where the SH3 folder is. Well only you know where you installed it ofcourse.

Anyway, regarding the download, if you generally have a pretty fast internet connection, but Utorrent is downloading slow, it can be fixed, but it's gonna get a little technical...

But it might be worth it, because using torrents can be a really fast way too download something, so this might come in handy in the future.

Easier still is sending Jimbuna a PM on how to download / install GWX with the multiple-file download.

But if you wanna use Utorrent:
Basically, you gotta forward your ports. That means setting a specific port range in Utorrent (and if you're on a local network, then [maybe] 'reserving' this/these port(s) in your router settings.)

In Utorrent:
Options, preferences, connection -> try filling in 42314 in the little screen
[mind you, I'm Dutch, so I'm translating those Utorrent terms, but I think I'm pretty much right]

This should help, but maybe you gotta assign this specific port number in your router. With that I can't really help since I don't know which router or modem you have. This page might help though: http://portforward.com/

Just saw you other thread; I know it can look overwhelming, but it's not so bad. Installing GWX itself is a piece of cake; it comes with an .exe file. Just double-click it, point out where you want GWX to install, and then it'll ask where the SH3 folder is. In your case, it's indeed in steam/steamapps I see now. Point GWX there when it asks for it.
That's it. GWX will install.

The third download is a reall small one. Just a couple of files that need to be installed in order for SH3Commander to work with GWX3.0. The same deal here, the link I gave you will get you an .exe file that'll install itself. Again, just assign it to the right folder.

Just a few weeks ago I had to figure all this out too. But believe me, it's worth it ;)

Collin Dougherty 02-25-11 07:31 PM

okay i got the modded files problem but thats because i wasent putting it in steam.
what EXACT file do i install it into.
Steam/steamapps/common/Silent hunter3/ then were???????????

Bakkels 02-25-11 07:35 PM

? You didn't install any mods before GWX3.0 did you? What exactly does it say?

Collin Dougherty 02-25-11 07:36 PM
