Quick question about escaping escorts

I've just sinked a fleet carrier in the mouth of the English channel, shallow water and a dozen of angry escorts... I've tried to escape few times, but neveve made it. One time i was depth charged for over 24 hours. I'm using "Magnum_Opus" mod.
Do i stand any chance? Don't they never run out of depth charges?!

:haha: they run out of depth charges but they follow you like forever

try to lower the sensors from ini.aix (related at your level) and you will not have this problem in the future - when you will improve your skills you can change back the sensors:up:

Not sure its a question of "skill" related.. I mean a dozen destroyers realistically your boned. lol. But yeah you can dumb 'em down so you can pull it off.

yes - my english is not so good - i mean depends when you started to play sh5 - if you are beginer then you must adjust the sensors from beginer level -

i have my tricks to escape from these DDs - i torpedo them from like 5-6 km and i run before my torpedo hit the target - then when everything is relax a bit i came back and hit another one and so one - untill i kill em all:haha:

Drewcifer 02-20-11 05:41 PM

haha.. yes but notice the point of your strategy that involves shooting and running away to hide.

Charging into a dozen escorts as he states, great captain or not, and sinking a carrier is a great way to die.

:DL - this method i use when i must to sink an capital ship or an aircraft carier wich is escorted by 5-6 DDs.

When i hunt an convoy i am crazy about shooting from an angle of 90 degrees 2-3 sheeps in the same column (almoust in the same time) and then go to 50 - 70 meters and escape under the convoy on the other side.

but almoust all my atacks i do in night time and btw since i use stormy&rongel ,,wasserbomben'' i was never hit by a dept charge - an wonderful sound compilation mod - i think is a must have for everyone (if you like to have all sounds in german:))

although i havent purchased sh5 yet... in sh3 and4 when i have some destroyers harrasing me heres what i do....

once they start a run over the top of me i'll start a turn... once they start the turn as well i go into reverse and let them start making circle around me with me ending up in the center... they'll just circle and circle unless another comes close and enters to start a run as well...

once circling you , you have to learn how to shoot a spread angle for a turning destroyer... with some practice you can make these shots either from aft or from the bow without wasting torps... but sometimes you do... but i'd rather waste a few and get them off my back than have to wait hours sitting deep waiting for them to move on.....

if in shallow water like you mentioned alot of times, at least in sh4, if they start depth charging in shallow waters they blow their own props and rudders off lol... so sometimes shallow waters isnt so bad...

Lets see..

Shallow Water: Check

Dozen Angry DDs: Check..

English Channel: Check.

Conclusion?: You're screwed. You're in shallow water so you can't take advantage of thermals or use deep depth evasion techniques... You're against multiple escorts meaning you'll always have at least 2-3 Boats tracking you passively... And you're in the channel, meaning they have air cover.

What were you thinking?

If your sunk in 1941 with a 10k merchant under your belt and thats it, then what good were you to the war effort :P But what he said, the shalow water, 12 angry dds and english channel combo is what got you. You just cant pull that off logistically. Unless your God, then its a different story. But for that many DDs you need deep water somewhere, theres no way youll make it out alive.

Better to take the time to plot the enemies course and plan the engagement so you're on favourable terms...

If the enemy even has a fighting chance, you've done your job wrong.

Drewcifer 02-21-11 07:15 AM

Glad to get some reinforcements Krauter!

Its not a matter of skill, its not a realistically possible plan.

No Sub captain is marching in to sacrifice his boat over a carrier to dance with 12 escorts in the english channel.

Don't change the difficulty settings, make better tactical choices.

You're right. But i thought it's 1939 so they can't be that good! Obviously i was wrong!

Regardless of the date, going head to head with a task force of that size, in the english channel... is nothing short of suicide.

Put yourself in the boat.. your real flesh and blood self.

As Krauter said.. a real captain would make a contact report.. take some readings, speed, course.. and shadow.

Deeper water, perhaps dark of night, ideal weather.. as a u boat captain stealth IS your weapon, do everything in your power to make the fight on YOUR terms. essentially you are a coward, always picking the unfair fight.. BUT thats just the way it is, your smaller, and less equiped you will never be able to go toe to toe with destroyers.

And with that amount they can sit off you and passively track you while making DC runs on you all day.

Honestly unless I was ordered to kill that carrier as captain of my boat i'd just report the task force to bdu and continue on my way. There is plenty of targets to be had and for alot less trouble.
