Using Tutorial V 2.0 by Hitman ... Need Help

My torps are all missing. I set up a small mission with 3 boats, 2 fairly columnar and one trailing. I set up a shot for the south boat in the single column and the second torp hit the trailing boat and I was baffled.

I followed the tutorial and when I realized I was measuring the boat lengths wrong :damn: I went to the website's encyclo, set up another shot to the starboard side and both missed . Now I am sailing as part of the convoy alongside humiliated :nope: having failed in my duty. The crew is laughing at me. :salute: :har:

I won't be much help as I stink at manual targetting.

I just wanted to say WELCOME ABOARD! :sunny:

Thank you. I often played with a strong reduction to realism and I wanted a challenge. Perhaps I should learn more about the process of setting up the TDC because I was sure I was sending the data necessary from recognition, computation of range through the stad, computing AOB using Hitman's strategy, then computing speed and all through this process I was sending data to the TDC and made sure to start the position keeper early in the process.

Problem was, when I went to switch targets, even after the updating the position keeper and TDC, the old ship data was present and I could not. I do not want to have to rely on the crew to do it all for me so I am still looking for assistance. I have watch youtube tutorials so I think what I am doing is right.

Well to keep the crew from laughing at you let's see what we can do.
These are shots in the dark as you didn't say what game you're playing.

Are you playing with map contacts on or off? It sounds like you have them off. Very hard to learn manual targeting that way. Contacts off is for more advanced players.

Always input data in this order with the PK on: 1) Speed 2) AoB 3) range/bearing. You get much better solutions this way.

Using boat length to figure anything is not very realistic, Fleet boat captains seldom had accurate boat lengths. They seldom even id the correct ship. Hitmans tutorial is very good but I do things much different.
There are now much better ways of getting a firing solution.

I'd turn contacts on and do your firing solution the way you are and when you're all done go to the attack map and check your solution. The white X will be the projected impact point and the line shows the projected course. If the X isn't very close to the target and staying with it over time your solution is wrong. Just watch for a minute or so and you should be able to see which data needs adjusting.

You set up the mission but I think you may have set yourself too close.
The time to set up your shot is well in advance. Give yourself at least 4 or 5 Nm. If you have radar go to 10 or more miles.

You want to plot the targets course, with this you can get AoB very easily.
Use the tool helper and than grab your ruler, you will see a compass rose.
Use this to get a true course in degrees. Ie. true east is 90° etc.
The rose is inverted so make sure you read to course closest to the target.

Once you have the course when you get around to inputting AoB into the TDC just make a good guess by what you see in the scope.
When you send that to the PK you will see the dial on the top left pull out move. The nose of the target boat has a 0 in front of it. That 0 should point to the course of the target. A course of 254° should show as 25+ 4 small lines. If it doesn't adjust the AoB dial till it does. AoB will be right on the money and you only have to get a good target course.

With contacts ON this is easy to do, just mark an X at the end of a sonar line or on the box or dot for radar. Mark the X when you see the target jump (sonar sweeps are 30 seconds, radar is 20) Start the stop watch as soon as the target jumps than mark your X. Wait 3 minutes and mark another X. measure the marks, each 100 yards = 1 knot. 500 yd = 5 kn.
I do this three times, that gives me a very good speed and course.
There are fractional speeds in TMO. 7.25 knots etc. makes a big difference at long ranges.
All you need then is range/bearing from the stedi and you're good to go.

With contacts off you have a much different ballgame. You have to generate all the plotting data yourself.
Go to the sonar station and find your target, use the home/end keys to sweep the sonar, your mouse wheel will fine tune it,
sweep across the target several times to get it dead center. Send bearing to TDC using the button. Nest go to the unit on the left and using the toggle switch send a ping to get range, when you hear the return ping send range to TDC. Use these values to plot your first point. Wait 3 or so minutes and repeat for your second plot. Measure the two points to get a target course. You may have to do this several times to get a good plot.
This is why you need to be far enough away so you have time to do all these things. This works best on a single ship.
Time the plots with the stop watch and you can get a pretty good speed, but you gota do the math. A nomograph works well here. DO NOT PING WARSHIPS.

That is where the 3D TDC and Radar mod (below) comes in. It makes things much easier but not like contacts on.

You want realism and challenge than I suggest you download the latest TMO 2.0 and the TMO 2.0 to 2.1 update. More challenge.
TMO is here

Or the latest RFB mod. More realism.
Real Fleet Boats is here.
http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=159709

Then download the 3D TDC and Radar mod.
This mod fixes the TDC and Radar to work more like they are supposed to.
I'm not too sure the TDC mod will work with RFB.
3D TDC and Radar mod is here.

Then you can really play with contacts off.
You'll also no doubt get a much better view of the sea floor than you want. :D

As for changing targets, make sure you id the new target.
Leave speed alone but adjust AoB backwards a small amount and send to PK. Get your new range/bearing and send this to PK. You should have a pretty good solution on the second target. Some people have to hit the send to PK triangle twice to get it to work right.

All this wall of text and I forgot to say "Welcome to the boat mate:salute:"
If this didn't help at all then give us your game specs and maybe someone with better skills will help you. That is why many of us are here, so ask away.

Magic

May I suggest you activate the Easy Aob mod for purposes of manual targeting?
