Ship names

I have a situation here.
http://img703.imageshack.us/img703/7686/shipname.jpg

The ship has no name.
Background: I have downloaded the Jap Handelskreuzerr (Thank you rowi58) and I liked it very much. So , I added it the British Fleet renaming it as AMC Armed Merchant Cruiser (see picture)
I can not make the SH3C to give a name to that ship.
How can this be done?
Thank you all.

Good question, which I do not have an answer to :hmmm:

Using the US BB Nevada as an example:

Go to the English names CFG in data\sea folder and enter BBNevadaA=Nevada class

Now go into your data\Roster\American\Sea folder, open up the BBNevada CFG and type the details ie:

[UnitClass]
ClassName=BBNevadaA
UnitType=11
AppearanceDate=19140711
DisappearanceDate=19480301
DisplayName=Nevada Class
[Unit 1]
Name=USS Nevada
DOC=19140711
DOD=19480901
[Unit 2]
Name=USS Oklahoma
DOC=19160502
DOD=19411231

Of course your AMC details will alread be in the appropriate folders but I think you have the idea/principle now.

If your using Steves ship names mod be sure to check his entries to ensure no clash or overwriting of information.

Sailor Steve 02-10-11 10:52 AM

1. Open Silent Hunter III/Data/Roster/British (I assume it's only in the British section)/Sea/"whatever that ship class is", and copy the "ClassName" exactly.

2. Open SH3 Commander/Cfg/Ship Names. Near the top you'll see [ClassMap]. At the bottom of the list add a new line:

"The ClassName you copied"=BrAuxCruiser

Now when you sink one of your new AMCs it should give it a name off the BrAuxCruiser list, which contains all the AMCs they had (as far as I know).

@ Jim: I'm pretty sure that since SH3 itself can't give names, that whole individual in-game ship name thing doesn't matter. I could be wrong, though.

Thank you both very much.
I am starting the procedure Sailor Steve described.
I will let you know if it is correct.

Edit: Yes it works just fine. Here is the new report

Thank you all once more for your help.

I remember asking about that once myself, I think that was the answer I got - that the list of names in the game's folders for ship classes seemed to be an "unfinished" feature and the alternate names would never appear in the game.

Sailor Steve 02-11-11 10:22 PM

I'm both sad and happy that the in-game naming system doesn't work.

Sad because it seems that I would be able to have every single name appear and disappear on the proper date, which would mean that ships which changed hands, nations, or even sides would be properly represented.

Happy because doing that 12,000+ times would be a nightmare. SH3C's 'tack-it-on-to-the-list' style is so much quicker and easier...:D

Lol, when I first saw the lists of names in the game's ship classes files I got all excited for a minute thinking "oh boy you could just put all the names in there..."

I don't think I had any clue at the time just how many names were involved. :doh:

I don't think they did either. :O:

While we're on that topic.... A big thanks to Steve and all the others who helped list all those names. I can fully appreciate doing the research for the military vessels and getting those names right... But to slog through merchant logs and what not..... impressive. :salute::up:
