grey sunk indicator

i attacked a convoy and sank one ship damaged another but after the convoy moves off i start seeing gray indicators for sunken ships is this an ai taking pot shots or are the ships so stupid that they ram each other:06:

Could be an air strike but I doubt it unless an American carrier group was close by. Was this a convoy or a task force?

In stock they do ram each other and some times sink, not too often.

Heavy weather will some times sink a DD or smaller, also not common.
I've only seen this twice in three years.

Last sometimes the game will just give you gray icons instead of red.

Of course there is one other explanation.
Were you any where near the Bermuda Triangle? :D

If you're playing the stock version, it might be the latter circumstance. Don't forget what happens when there's a polecat in the henhouse. The chickens scatter in every direction.
Add rough seas to the equation and you've got yourself a Japanese firedrill. (no malice intended)http://www.freesmileys.org/smileys/s...ashamed005.gif

Basically when ships sink that you can't see they will show gray for whatever reason. I recall ships ramming and sinking each other a lot in stock, DD's blowing themselves up with depth charges, ect. That's rare to see with mods. Could also be planes, ect...but if you can see it, they will sink red, if not, gray.

Did you send off a contact report before attacking? If so, it is possible that they are under attack by friendly forces, although you have to be close to a friendly airbase or task force.

As for ships ramming each other, in the stock game, this was only really noticeable, to me, up to version 1.3. With versions 1.4 & 1.5(U-boat missions - pay for the patch) the pathfinding of the scattering convoy was much improved, and I don't recall seeing any ships ramming into each other as they scattered.

well, grey either means a sunk ship not identified yet as friend or foe, or possibly you sunk a neutral merchant part of the japanese convoy. Dont worry, happens to the best of us... Consult RockinRobbins for a friendly attack on USS Essex and ensuing commendation by Lockwood :D

Just out of curiosity, what year are you in and where did you run into this convoy? Also, what version of SHIV are you running and with what (if any) mods?:hmmm:

clear skies, calm seas, convoy and if stock means no mods yes to that, no carrier groups on map, 1941 campaign early into the new year before midway

I play RFB-RSRDC. I sank a merchant, where there was no marker on the map, once. The seas were very rough and it might have been out of sight at the moment. The crew announced it and it was in the log though. AFAIK, I got credit for it.

If you do sink a neutral/friendly, how would you know?
