Right what I am m issing in operation Atalanta. A lack of resolve with the poltiical doves at home. "Pirates also have legitimate interests", etc. :shifty:

I don'T blame the military crews at location, but their political leadership.

Pirates löast yeasr again collected record ransoms and had hijacked more ships and people tha n ever before, also widening their operational area again. Their equopment and armamaent is also improving. Poltical reaction in Europer: none. Correction to the optimistically so-called "military mandate": the same - none.

I still vote for what I alraedy suggested two years ago: starting to systemtically bombard all land-based supply-points and hideouts and villages were pirates operate from or find hiding. Armed helicopters like "Little Birds" stationed on board of ships large eouigh to allow them landing. Armed forces with missiles and HMG boarding the ships during transit. The latter is done by some companies not trusting Atalanta.

RMN Commandos stationed on the Aux Vessel MV Bunga Mas 5 rescued the commercial tanker MT Bunga Laurel and its crew on the same day.

At first I thought it was a training exercise, there there were broken windows and bullet holes, which makes me think real. But they seemed awfully nice to the pirates:shifty:. I guess I'm use to the Russian response to terrorism.:D

Having a small force of US troops get overrun and lose 19 guys may sound like we got our asses kicked but we killed between 1000 and 3000 of the enemy.

The problem with not paying is that these guys are bad enough to start killing people. I agree that we should strike at the pirate bases and just pre emtively sink any pirate skif we see.

I am quite brutal in hostage issues. I never accept to pay for hostages' release. It is like getting killed in any form of accident - it is brutal, too, but it happens. Let people know about areas and endavours that are risky to their security - reeders could avoid such waters and add the additonal costs to their prices, or they pay higher wages to crew willing to accept the risk, or they could enage oprivate combat power. So, the market here would regulate it. Regarding porivate travels, if people want to do holiday in countgries that are rated as danegeorus by their goivernments, doing so should free the government from needing to take care of rescuing efforts in case travelers ignored the warnings against better knoweldge and advise.

People are free - free to be stupoid, too, and free to take risks. If they chose to do that, I see no moral or legal obligation to necessarily come to their rescue.

If accidents and mishaps take place without people inviting risks or ignroing warnings - that then should be something different for their government, it should act.

But paying ransoms and make compromising deals with criminals? Never. Totally unacceptable. It'S a trategdy for the single case beign actual. But in the long run, it prevents more tragedies from happening. Paying and letting them escape just encourages and strengthens crime.

Priority is the arrest or killing of the criminal/attacker. No payment. No escape.

These pirates are operating from the horn of Africa all the way to the coast of India, basically the entire northern Indian Ocean which is surrounded by choke points. Not sending ships there would cut off a huge area of trade (namely India and the ME). Even if some shipping companies charge extra there will be some who don't to under bid them.

If they find the crews to take the risk - well, it is not my problem. Sailors can refuse to board ships and sign contracts.

The alternatives are military forces or mercenaries aboard the ships, which the EU alrerady whined about - too harsh, or waging full war on the pirates and wiping them out, which the EU also does not like: too harsh, too costly, it says. I am for the latter, to avoid making spending on anti-pirate operations a thing lasting forever.

But that is not being considered. So it seems in a way we deserve these pirates.

It's like with any war: either do it right and put your heart into it, or better let it be. Half-hearted foolishness leads nowhere, and just makes the misery lasting longer than necessary.
