exploding ship, glitch. or authentic?

i took a bunch of in game screen shots (by pressing print screen) but i dunno where they saved too :c, i'll post pictures when i find then XD

but yes, i was sailing along, sinking destroyers and i torpedoed a destroyer in the ass, so it started sinking stern first, i switch to my mail view for a second and slow down the speed (coz i'm pretty close behind the ship and don't want to ram it) then i look thru the periscope again and all i see is the bow, which looks to have blown off, bobbing in the water, i figured "oh cool! it blew off!" and switch to extrenal and pause it too look at the damage, so i look under the water for a minute or 2 and can't find the ship at all, confused i start looking around and i spot it's shadow on the top of the water and i start going up, as i break the water i see this huge ship flying a good ship length up in the air XD

almost like it exploded and sent it skyward!

has this happened to anybody before or is this a very hillarious glitch?
