They can still be a chore to find, unless you pick ambush points. RSRD is historical, so your gonna find traffic in historical places. I do understand the want to just find things, played RSRD that way for over a year. Still, at the beginning of the war you know the Philippines is being invaded, so hunt around ports there. The japs then work south towards Java, in 42 the Solomons.
The best you can do is place yourself where the game tells you campaigns are happening. Course if you know history and know traffic will be there and don't want to go there, then you'll miss the biggest groups in RSRD. So watch the lil intel movies when you dock and see where intel thinks major action is coming, go there instead of your patrol zone. You'll get flash messages and be close enough to intercept.
One good things about RSRD is most of the patrol zones have something major coming through, but it's a matter of timing. Whatever is coming through doesn't care about your patrol star being yellow or gray. Simply, you get to your patrol zone early and the star goes gray and you leave, you may miss something scheduled for the next day. If you're gonna do patrol zones, go there by the quickest route and hange around for a few days after the star grays out.
You're next bet is to hang around the outside of straits where large naval bases exist.
