Earth avoids sure disastor...
 

A large... very large solar magnetic flare went off on Monday. Fortunatly for us is missed the earth.

I'm no astronomer, but it looks to me like it missed the Earth by a really really long way.

Keep in mind that earth is about the size of the 'little' hole that the filiment came out of :o

If it had been aimed in the right direction it would have engulfed our little blue marble.

And I still wake up to -15 degree weather. :haha:

The ejection would have hit us eventually, if it had been directed towards us, and that would have been....interesting. No frying of course, but a good percentage of the worlds electronics would have gone zzt.
IIRC there was a conference in London on dealing with the effects of a large CME hit on the Earths magnetosphere not so long ago.

Huh. Learn something new every day.

That will be SG1 going back to attend Woodstock in 1969 :D

From what I understand solar flairs can be a big concern. I'm amazed at how much fuel that ball of hot light has. Question is when will it fizzle out?

If a solar flare did hit, not only will satellites be affected, but also power grids can be overwhelmed causing blackouts.

Thankfully the big ones are fairly rare, once every 500 odd years or so, but even a small hit could fry a city grid effectively, and we're heading for a peak of the current solar cycle which is next year and 2012 IIRC, and with our globe now very reliant on electricity, it's no wonder that people are starting to take this a bit more seriously now. :up:
