How is it possible?

Hello everyone,
SH4 is still not working perfectly.
After the third time I try the simulator (with or without mods) something is still in the wrong way.
I tried with UBM - UBM+RFB2+RSRDC - UBM+TMO2+RSRDC @ 1605x1050 60hz

In the menu, missions menu, the navigation map and when I pause the game
the system is overloaded and shotdown the computer.
Is the only game that gives me these problems...and I would not burn my motherboard or video... :)
Of course I followed the advice on installation and removal...reboot reboot reboot...
I can not believe that a 512 MB video card or a processor like mine unable to run a game like that.
If I think of game engines like HL2 from Valve (forgive the example ... but you will understand) I seem to be plunged into a nightmare.

In 3d setting of my video i use Optimal Performance setting..but probably some of you would suggest.
For example Anisotropic settings..anti aliasing...mipmap.
And so on.

Here'is my specs:
RAM 3 GB
Intel Core 2 E7200 @ 2.53 Ghz
Asus P5Q Pro
Ati HD 4850 _512MB_
Driver Packaging Version 8.791-101026a-107884C-ATI
Catalyst™ Version 10.11
Directx version 9.0c (4.09.0000.0904)
Win XP + SP2

I have not had any problems in installation (like the s.o. the video drivers etc) but on the site amd recommend a fix to those who have had installation problems....recommended to install it?
This is the link
http://support.amd.com/it/kbarticles...AGPHotfix.aspx

Thanks for your attention

I don't see any reason why your system cannot handle SHIV and I'm inclined to believe that the issue is not with the game. I have a suggestion that, if you haven't already done this, it may help.

First: Right click on "My Computer"
and choose "Properties" at the bottom of the menu.
When the System Properties interface appears, click on the ":Advanced" tab. On the top section under "Performance", click on the "Settings" button. In the Performance interface, the "Visual Effect" tab should already be open. If not, click on it and choose the "Adjust for best performance" radio button. Then, while still in that window, click on "Advanced" and make sure both "Programs" radio buttons are selected. If not, select them, click "OK" on all windows until they're gone. Try running the game and see if there is any improvement.

Your video card appears more than capable to run SHIV, I run it with an nvidia 6600, but I'm not the least bit familiar with those dual core processors. Are all your motherboard drivers installed ? Did you run dxdiag to see if there are any directx issues ? have you tried putting the game graphics into it's lowest detail settings ? Did you try setting the video driver settings to a lower detail setting ?

There's so many possibilities, you must start from the basics.

Another possibility-The Ati HD 4850 may not be fully DX9 compatable.

@ Wernher :
I tried your advice...but nothing has changed. For example, when I came from a training mission of the school, while I was on the screen to exit some fan started to spin faster. I click exit and the fan now ... suddenly slowed.
Always the same thing. In mission, when I move the map to chart the course.

@ MaddogK :
Yes i think all the drivers are installed...indeed, I am sure. The fact remains that check if there is any update...
I have no problems with directx...but if anyone can help I attach the file.
I also tried the low resolution..and the result is what you just read above.
I do not know whether to cry when I think SH3 runs better with the settings to maximum. :timeout:

Thank you guys!!
Sorry my english

One word: overheating! :D

If you have a look in Windows logfiles -> ATI, there'll probably be some red marked errors...

If you want to do a test, then enable your ATI overclock and manually set fan speed to 100% and do another run. It will be noisy, but it'll show you if the system still shuts down...

I used to have this problem with Silent Hunter 3, and believe it or not running a music program like Winamp in the background while the game is playing really helps keep the program running. And if the program crashes, having the program running in the background causes my computer to crash to desktop instead of completely freezing up.

Hi Arael my only background programs are: avast 5 , Six Engine (power saving software from asus) however, that I need to put the turbo system (fans, etc. ..)...zone alarm and all the usual svchost running always. Note that for example I removed one of the svchost spool.exe
Thank you

Hi Jan i take look in C:\WINDOWS\Logs...no log files Ati.
I'll add a fan? :)

Jan Kyster 12-07-10 04:05 PM

No, use the event viewer. Here's one way to open it: http://www.windows-help-central.com/...event-log.html

Look for an entry called ACEEventLog...

A fan wouldn't harm :D but I would wait until established what the problem actually is.

Parted from the assumption that you're right about the fans...regardless of the problem...ACEE said: 000000372: 2010-12-07 21:26:09:562 Exception

but I have a surprise...in Application i fund this message of a faulting application (sh4.exe) the module that caused the error shsim.act vers. 0.0.0.0 error address 0x0001cdca...
There is something for everyone in short.
For now I switch the fan to 85 > 100 , alternating other video resolutions ,
and for now the pc stays on..except a few random visuals slowdown
everything seems to go well @ 1680 with medium settings and ship map,hi skin ship, volumetric fog active.
Indeed the only three that i like...so if the terrain is not heavy may be able to use the high settings....may be.
And no doubt..i should buy the fans....

Thanks again.

You can try a utility called WhoCrashed?, an automatic crash dump analyzer. Upon restart, run this utility and see if it tells you it was a graphics system problem or something else entirely.

I tend to agree that your video card may be overheating. You also could be having CPU overheating. I've seen a breakdown of the thermal paste between the CPU and heat sink that necessitated taking apart the computer, removing and replacing the thermal paste. That also was a failure happening only in SH4, not any other game.

But check out WhoCrashed to see if we're barking up the right tree.:D

Hi Rockin the problem occurs only with sh4. Last night I used SH3 with GWX
with the video card fan @ 100% and nothing happened. Keeping an eye on the temperatures I've seen is the video card of up to 107 °....w00w..then she is definitely the "problem" .
Now I'm informing to mount a good heatsink for my Ati and a front and rear fan for the case...I think it's more than enough..if not exaggerated!!

Thank you!!!

Jan Kyster 12-09-10 09:56 AM

Yeah... my 4870x2 went to 115 degree before shutting down the system... :nope:

Problem is, once it's been running that hot, the thermal paste turns into something almost like concrete = totally useless.
And it ruins the fan - if it wasn't broken before... :shifty:

May I recommend Arctic cooling fans? Very efficient and relatively cheap...

My present 5970 is cooled by Arctic and it hasn't seen a temp above 55 degree yet... http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=174638 :D

Best of luck! :salute:

Yes Jan, I was just thinking about you to those...still expect the supplier to give me information about.

Thank you Jan !

Hi,
I'm back again.
I stripped the whole pc to clean everything..it's embarrassing to tell you how the video card was reduced..
The HD 4850 has a relatively small heatsink outputs and I found almost 2 cm of dust between the fan and the heatsink....and this, of course, was the reason for the overheating.
Considering that these cards are already hot from the factory specifications, now the temperature is about 50°C (idle)...excellent.
So I tried again the game at different resolutions and activating or not the graphics options available...And I think I can say that the problem at this point, it is inherent in the graphics engine.
Excluding reboots due to overheating..there are still light delays on the graphics.
That was not a great engine was already evident...but I was hoping for some improvements.
Patience.
Bearing in mind that we all have to constantly improve our work,I hope that those of Ubisoft inspired by a serious group such as the Valve.
However now I have bought a better fan and heatsink to improve the overall efficiency of the computer. :DL

Many thanks to all !
