Inferno in Israel: The Carmel Fire

Running From Flames
While it's uncertain how it started (officials are speculating it may have been triggered by an illegal garbage fire), Israel is struggling to control a mammoth fire near the northern city of Haifa that is being called one of the worst natural disasters in the country's history. At least 40 people are dead, dozens more are missing, and thousands have been evacuated. Above: An Israeli firefighter runs from the raging blaze in Beit Oren, Carmel Forest.

One would assume that Israel would be better prepared for this as they are used to handle emergencies. Sadly they don't have any friendly neighbours to help out...

The fire seems now to be under control.

And the usual brain-amputees also utter their crap
Gaza Hamas leader: Carmel fires are Israel's divine punishment:

they seem to be too busy praying for rain rather than thinking about how fires distinguish between Israelis and Arabs :damn:

The big complaint is that they were completely unrepared and the fire service had been starved of resources for years.
Their neighbours helped out when Israel allowed help, it struggled on itself foolishly even though its core resources ran out after 7 hours.

I revise my former statement: it seems that Jordan sent 3 fire engines and also the Palestinian Authorities (from the West Bank) sent 21 firefighters.

Still, this whole event sheds no good light on Israel's civil denfences.
