I didn't know that.
Greetings,
playing in a recent career and was attacking a convoy. There was a solitary DD 'twixt the convoy and me so I tasked my hydrophone operator to track it as it was the nearest enemy ship. Fair enough I keep getting reports on the DD, it's moving away so I concentrate on my attack. Then the report "enemy brg c045 degs moving away fast long range". I raise the 'scope and BANG!! A DD rolls over me! Attack 'scope, deck gun destroyed and major hull leaks. End of a promising career. What had obviously happened is that the hyd operator stays with the original 'nearest' enemy even when it is no longer the nearest. Has any one else fallen for this one? |
I'll be the first to answer with this....
yes, once. I doubt I'll be the last. |
Yup.
Except it was a cruiser I was tracking and a DD attacked me. |

No I didn't know that.

Wow, I didn't know that either...
What a cheap a$! trick by the 'phones man. No wonder I have issues all the time trying to slip away from the escorts after a convoy attack. All in favor of tossing the curr overboard?! :x |
Sometimes it pays to man your own hydrophones.... :yep:
|
It makes perfect sense though. You told him to concentrate on one target. That means he's no longer doing sweeps to find other targets, so he wouldn't even have known the second DD was coming closer.
|
I thought that was pretty obvious myself, you are telling him to track one target to the exclusion of his normal sweep. If you press again later, if something is closer he'll let you know. He's good that way.

I never once fell for that 'feature' - I repeatedly fell for it. :smug:

I've modified the destroyer hydrophone signature so it's now extremely distinctive. When I'm sitting in front of the 'phone, I can home in on what I feel is the greatest threat... but is this cheating?
