And here I thought the GTX 480 would be on top for along time...

Then I go to look for new driver and find They made the 580... sigh.

Hmm, well the core, and shaders are pretty close to my 480. Though the 480 has better rateings, Im guessing it probably has cooling problems, and power consumption worse than the 480 though.

Oah well, guess the new 500s are just in time for my major overhual next year(or maby Ill just get a second 480).

the_tyrant 11-26-10 09:18 PM

experience tells me that the speed that new video card are being put on the market is increasing
BTW, i'm really sick of the renaming game
8800gs turns into a 9600gso...
the 580 is just a 480 on steroids. i think that its cheating. 5s and 4s should be a generation apart

Task Force 11-26-10 09:29 PM

Yea, I could probably get my 480 to the same specs, but I will get better cooling first.

Arclight 11-27-10 06:48 PM

The only difference is that the 500 is "full" Fermi. All the 400 cards have part of the core disabled to increase yields.

Don't bother if you have a 400.

Herr-Berbunch 11-27-10 06:58 PM

Aw, and there was me going to offer him $20 for his 480 if he upgraded to 580... it is after all, I believe, the going rate? :O:

Arclight 11-27-10 07:06 PM

He'll probably upgrade anyway.

Herr-Berbunch 11-27-10 07:14 PM

Then my offer still stands, I'll even pay postage to UK :D

Task Force 11-27-10 07:20 PM

I am actualy going to just get a second 480, and SLI them...

I need to update my CPU, MoBo, 2nd GPU, and PSU. with 1,500(what can I say, I but almost nothing all year.). Im guessing the 480s prices will go down with the 580 out.

Arclight 11-27-10 07:28 PM

Should come to $420,-. Not sure what the current prices are over there.

Was a little shortsighted: core has been revamped a little and actually draws less power and produces less heat.

Conclusion stands though, from performance perspective: don't bother if you have a 400.

Whats funny is that the 480 isnt that much more powerful than the gtx 285. But i do believe the jump from a 285 up to a 580 is quite substantial.

Task Force 12-11-10 11:26 PM

From what im to understand a 580 is a 480 but with some changes.

The answer we’ve decided is one of mild, but well earned praise. The GTX 580 is not the true next-generation successor to the GTX 480; it’s the GTX 480 having gone back in the womb for 7 months of development. Much like AMD, NVIDIA faced a situation where they were going to do a new product without a die shrink, and had limited options as a result. NVIDIA chose wisely, and came back with a card that is both decently faster and a refined GTX 480 at the same time.

Full Fermi with optimizations.

480 is a lot faster than a 285, close to twice as fast at times, and a 580 actually increases that gap by quite a bit (2 to 2.5 times as fast).

I must admit 580 is a more substantial improvement than I first figured. Typically you'll see 10-15% improvement, but it can go as high as 20-25% more fps, depending on the application and the quality settings (bigger difference at higher qualities).

*Also; GTX 570:
Quote:

Whereas the GTX 580 took a two-tiered approach on raising the bar on GPU performance while simultaneously reducing power consumption, the GeForce GTX 570 takes a much more single-tracked approach. It is for all intents and purposes the new GTX 480, offering gaming performance virtually identical to the GTX 480 at a lower price, and with less power consumption along with lower temperatures and less noise. As a lower tier GF110 card the GTX 570 won’t wow the world with its performance, but like the GTX 580 it’s a solid step forward. In this case it’s a solid step towards bringing yesterday’s performance to the market at a lower price and with power/thermal/noise characteristics better suited for more systems. If nothing else, NVIDIA has translated the GTX 580’s excellent balance of performance and noise to a lower priced, lower performing tier.
