Capital ships.
Which ones are these? I am on the 1940 Campaign, "Happy times" I was curious if the capital ships were the battleships? Or what? lol. Where is it most likely too find them, I've been all over trying to find them but couldn't...I can find convoys no problem, but no task force of battleships or escorts.

hey CodyLang
i found a large task force and sunk 1 large battleship (cant remember its exact type now) and 1 aircraft carrier escorted by several destroyers on that mission.hope this helps.:) |
Capital ships are indeed the big battleships, cruisers and carriers. They are a lot rarer than merchant ships, and are not used as escorts under normal circumstances so you rarely run into them. They spend most of their time in guarded ports awaiting their next mission, so you can try and sneak into Scapa Flow or Loch Ewe to sink one if you are feeling brave.
When out at sea they are very difficult targets as they move far faster than merchants and are heavily escorted by destroyers. You are forced to submerge and can't do more than a few knots, where they can do better than 20 knots just cruising along. You need the rare event of running into a task force which then runs right over your nose and gives you enough time to get off a salvo. I have had this happen only once in many, many hours of playing. |
I sunk the HMS Hood and Nelson in Scapa, but didn't count because they where sitting in port and not escorting...guess Ill stay around scapa and hope they leave soon lol

Got it....I sat outside Scapa for about 4-5 days...See that the Nelson left so I waited...All of a sudden task force just to the east of me heading in my direction...Spotted the convoy, 1 aircraft carrier, the Nelson, and a Cruiser with alot of escorts...Managed to sneak into the convoy and destory all 3:)

My finest hour was running into a taskforce that was heading soutwest from Scapa into the Atlantic while I was lingering off the north coast of Ireland waiting for convoys going to Liverpool. There was the Nelson and another battleship I didn't identify, and a screen of about 7 destroyers. I just had time to get off a salvo at long range, 3 of which hit the Nelson and 1 hit the other BB. Mayhem ensued, but I was well away in deep water so got off light. The Nelson sank after a while, and the rest of the task force made off at speed.

Historically weren't older battleships used as escorts?
|
Not very often, they tended to be used only if they expected to run into surface raiders like Scharnhorst attacking the Russian convoys. Even then they would usually have a small task force hang back over the horizon trailing the convoy, waiting on a raider to show.

I'm in 1941 right now and have come across a couple of convoys escorted by battleships in the Atlantic

didn't I already sink you before?
The Queen elizibeth rose from her grave so I pushed her back in and good ridence

hehe She'll be back:-?

EDIT: I think I figured that out, there were 5 ships in the Queen Elizabeth class so in SH5 it looks like the same ship I guess if you sink it more than 5 times then the game is unrealistic. |
