Royal Oak 3D!
Well, sort of. Doing some research on the events in Scapa Flow and just came across several images that were generated from a sonar survey of the wreck of the Royal Oak.
The image below shows the hull damage from U-47's torpedoes. A portion of the bow had been blown off by the first eel (click to enlarge): http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/pict...pictureid=3145 There are four other images at the web page. :salute: http://www.hmsroyaloak.co.uk/survey.html . |

Looking at the other Royal Oak photos the view from inside looking through the torpedoed holes and then the external view gave an attention grabbing thought to the actual size of the vessel. Great site, thanks krashkart.

The underwater photographs are astounding. Puts a whole new perspective on things.
They have a small collection of the hand drawn section plans there, too. :DL Midship section, showing thickness of torpedo belt and faint outline of the stabiliser compartments (click to enlarge): http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/pict...pictureid=3147 http://www.hmsroyaloak.co.uk/construction.html :salute: |
