Aircraft
I just got my new type IXB:DL (I can't stand the VIIB(Nothing wrong with it))
and I got some new crew. Then I went out on patrol, first enemy I find is a plane, it was early war so I risked it. Got my flak gunners out, told them to hold their fire (No need to waste ammo). When it was about 500m away I told them to fire. Planes down in five seconds. The guy who downed that plane was using a light flak. On my way back I see another plane, get the guy out put him on the light flak, plane gets close, he fires and the planes gone. I watched the plane and the guys shots, I saw three shots miss.:o I know who's getting a medal thats for sure :arrgh!: |
Just about guarantee he won't be able to hit one of these. :)
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedi..._Liberator.jpg Crash dive when you see them. Not worth trying to duke it out with them; they almost always win. :haha: |
Well, it was early war and I had an angle advantage.
If I crash dive the first pass could of still hit. and I know how to deal with them (I got the Extended warranty :DL) |

Just try and do that on GWX, and you'll be sunk for sure:doh:

I tried it at naval academy - flak school. It´s a nice teaser of what you can expect out there later. :dead: |

Fighters on the other hand I steer clear of, an MG is much easier to use than a bomb on those planes and I'd rather not explain to Donitz why my Uboat looks like swiss cheese :DL |

The only time I will take on a plane is when I cannot submerge, such as when I am moving external torpedoes. And after mid-war, I usually just jettison the torpedo (you can't get rid of it, but I just don't play it). |
I always crash dive (if I am able) on spotting an aircraft.
Got caught by a Catalina whilst bringing in externals last week, a definite reminder that my policy is one I'll be sticking to. My flak gunner hit it a few times but it nearly ripped the sub apart before either running out of ammo (3 or 4 passes, I was too busy fighting flooding to count), going back to tell his mates or being driven off by the flak. I play with GWX so those Catalinas are bad news |
Same here. I only tangle with planes if I am forced to, either by being caught short or being caught in the process of reloding externals. I know I could simply dive, but that's gaming the game, not playing by historical limitations that didn't make it into the game. A shame; though I admit it is very, very tempting to dive, but I resist the impulse. I once got caught by a Catalina and it made three passes on me before my flak gunner shot it up and it flew away, smoke trailing from one wing. I only reload externals at night time, away from heavily patrolled areas or in foggy but calm weather. Rough seas I don't even bother.

I won't go out of my way to reload the externals, but I always got my flak gunners out(Better safe than sorry).

I just had quite the rush. Running a career in a Type IID, something I haven't done in months. Anyway, got jumped by a flight of Swordfish tonight and didn't realize how vulnerable those little boats are. Not a single bomb that made a direct hit but there were a couple that exploded nearby in the water. Just those near misses were enough to damage systems in four compartments. Real eye opener. :o
Now I remember why I like the VII's and IX's so much. Better survivability. :haha: |

But , the most realistic is , in this case , to fight your way out since you have open hatches or dive after the second pass of the plane, pretending that you have jetisson all equipment and the torpedo as well. It is what I do in such a case. |
