USS Natilus... special event

Although a tad dated its an interesting insight to a HAM radio special event station involving the USS Natilus.

Things are progressing nicely on our Nautilus North Pole anniversary operating event. I heard from Chuck Motes, K1DFS/NNN0HAL, yesterday and he and his group are having discussions with LCDR Caskey and his staff at Historic Ship Nautilus about where we will be able to set up the stations. The really exciting news is that we will have the okay to operate continuously from 0900 Saturday, August 2, through 2359 Sunday night, August 3. That means someone will get a QSO with N9N at 2315 EDST, August 2, the precise moment when Nautilus and her crew of 116 "pierced the Pole," and became the first vessel to reach that point on the planet.

Thanks I'm pretty aware of what SSB is and how it works since I build and repair amateur transmitters as a hobby.

Anyhow the titanic used CW (or morse code).

It's true that amateurs were experimenting with SSB in the era but it was not widely in use by commercial facilitys at the time as its range was limited and CW has alot more 'punch'.

But were wandering way off topic. I just thought folks would get a kick out of the Nautilis event.

USS Natilus, has perhaps been forgotten by some, or so it is a generation shift when interest is not there anymore

Not forgotten on SubSim. Bill served on her.
