Putin plays down talk of battle for Arctic resources
Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin has rejected talk of an impending battle for control of the Arctic region's mineral resources. He told an international conference in Moscow he was confident the region's resources could be exploited in a spirit of partnership.
Russia believes the UN will recognise its claim to much of the Arctic seabed. The scramble for resources has been set in motion partly by improved access caused by the melting of polar ice.Russia, Norway, Canada, Denmark and the US have all laid claims to territory in the region. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-11397671 Note: 23 September 2010 Last updated at 12:19 GMT |
Of course he would, they only want a "small" chunk of the arctic and are in the process of building floating Nuclear reactors to power future oil/gas rigs.

Hope it all freezes over again! Then they would be back to square one!:yep:
|
The Russians have had subs up there for years they know the area well.
"Hope it all freezes over again! Then they would be back to square one!" I think if that happened God would laugh so hard he'd trip and break the universe :DL |
I wonder how far you can hear underwater up in the artic?
We should put listening post up there with computers programed to hear missile doors opening. GPS that sucker and they are out of there with a well placed shot. Our budget is so tight the Coast Guard can't even get a new cutter for up there. We need to start building now to defend our rights for the artic later. |
Later, when it may be too late ... :hmmm:
|
You can't hear jack in the arctic.
Besides when it comes to Artic claims given that the Russians have the largest coastline it is no wonder they want to claim most of it. the US's coastline in the artic is the smallest of all the competing nations and you have to deal with the little dispute with Canada first. |
But our listening buoys perceive a part of reality, but a lot of interest is to be expected from the leading countries' right to the Artic.

Woop. Climate change is causing ice retreat, so we can drill for more oil and gas then before.
