Can you patch and mod SH3 if you bought it on Steam?

Good Morning All,

I couldn't get my DVD of SH3 to work on my new Windows 7 OS so I just bit the bullet and bought the game on Steam.

I wanted to install the GWX3.0 mod but I read that I need to install the 1.4b patch (for digital download instead of DVD version). I installed the patch but it wouldn't install because it couldn't find SH3. That's why I wondering if it's possible to patch a game on Steam and install the mods for the game.

If anyone knows how to fix it please let me know, and please be specific (I only just installed Steam last night and bought SH3 again... also I've never downloaded or played a game using a mod before)

Thanks for any help!

Isn't the Steam download already patch to 1.4b?

Steam is already patched to 1.4.

You can mod freely, just keeping in mind that Steam's directory path will be a bit different.

Not to sound stupid :06: but what would I have to do differently to get the Grey Wolves 3.0 mod to work?

I see that I have to download about 9 different files and then an exe file. Will it automatically find the steam download or do I have to manually tell it where to look? If I have to manually do it... how do I do it?

Final question in this post: Is the Grey Wolves 3.0 mod worth it? I never installed a mod when I originally played SH3 so I'm sure I'm behind the times compared to most of the posters on this forum. :hmmm:

Make sure all the .bin files (should be 7) and the .exe (just the one) are in the same place, run the .exe and all should be revealed, I think you have to point it at the steam directory as timmy41 mentioned earlier.

Where did you get GWX from? As far as I'm aware Jimbuna's signature link to FileFront is the only reliable source. :yep:

Most things that are wrong in the original SH3 are fixed/improved, anything that isn't is hard-coded and mods can do nothing for. GWX or any other supermod (LSH, WAC, NYGM) are indeed classed by the vast majority as a 'must'! :D GWX is definately worth it - it is the only supermod I've used so far but the others certainly have their praises sung!

I haven't downloaded the mod yet... I googled it and when I read that I had to be patched to 1.4 first I tried doing that... only to find out (Thanks to this great forum :yeah:) that Steam already had it patched.

Now I have a link to get the mod... I couldn't ask for anything more than this forum has provided!

You're likely aware of this already, but just in case. Games in general tend to work with less issues when you install them outside of the "Program Files" or "Program Files (x86)" folders that Win 7 uses. This unfortunately requires one to re-install Steam to another location (c:\steam, etc...), but it's good to keep in mind if you ever re-install Steam or encounter issues.

My steam version works fine. Just make sure it's 1.4, and all the directories are pointing to the spot.

Maybe I need a clean install first? I've been playing on it a while
