Another "Should I buy" thread
Sorry for creating another "should I buy thread", but there are some specific questions I need answered before I commit to buying this game:
1. Here are the basic specs for my system: iBUYPOWER Gamer Power 927SLC Intel Core i5 650(3.20GHz) 4GB DDR3 500GB NVIDIA GeForce GTS 250 Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit I'm sure my system can handle the game, but at what level. Will I expect serious fps problems? Will an increase in RAM help? What graphic level will should i expect? 2. I have Hughes Net satellite internet with a max daily download of 200mb. After I hit 200mb my internet speed really decreases. Does the internet piracy protection system send a lot of data back and forth that will max my limit quickly? 3. I am an experienced SH3 & SH4 player. One thing I like, but wish they would improve on is crew management. Is crew management represented in SH5? Is it improved? 4. In SH3 & 4, I set up my own targeting solutions. I hated just "locking" onto a ship and firing. How is it represented in SH5? 5. And lastly, I can handle "minor" bugs. Is there anything "majorly" wrong with SH5? Thanks in advance with all of your help. |

2. I don't know. I _heard_ it sent a lot, but I didn't measure. Good question by the way. 3. Improved compared to SH3, but still poor. I don't know SH4 though, never played it. There are some mods, but it's still poor. I've read opinion around that people want to mod SH4 crew management to SH5, so I assume they think SH4 one is better than this. EDIT: In fact I can't say there's any crew management at all... You can only award them and spend skill points, but there is no real "managements" where it comes to duties. I say it's better than in SH3, as I don't have to spent half the game time dragging my crew to and fro - that was very tedious. 4. Not in Vanilla, but there are at least 2 excellent mods that allow as much manual targeting as you are ready for: - [REL] Multiple UIs for SH5 with TDC by TheDarkWraith, - [REL] HiDef Realistic Interface V2.0 by reaper7 They're are not cross-compatible. I use the TDW's one, right now however the second one has more tools for manual targeting. 5. I don't think there's now anything that completely ruins the game for manual targeters, but the smaller bugs accumulation is really annoying, sometimes frustrating. But you say you canlive with that. Let''s see if you can live with DRM. :D |
Ah, not again! Take this advice. Read the varous posts. Make up your own mind. My advice? Buy it and install mods. Stock game will leave you in the brig. The mods make the difference. Sorry for being so terse but I got 5 minutes to finish this report at work.:D

Why not play SH3/4 and 5 . Its very playable and if you have a good machine the graphics are wonderful . Sure there are a lot of missing things but with the mods its just fun anyway . Do you want me to hold your hand and take you down to the game shop .

IMO, buy it. plays the same as previous games only with great eyecandy. And will only get better as more and more of it get modded.:yep: 1. My system can have all settings on max and i still get good FPS 15 - 40. My systems is way lower spec than yours, My system is bottlenecked at my CPU. see my sig for specs... 2. I have Hughes Net satellite internet with a max daily download of 200mb. After I hit 200mb my internet speed really decreases. Does the internet piracy protection system send a lot of data back and forth that will max my limit quickly? If you turn save sync off then the data transfer is very low. Cloud saves can use up your allowence fast.... just turn save sync off. 3. I am an experienced SH3 & SH4 player. One thing I like, but wish they would improve on is crew management. Is crew management represented in SH5? Is it improved? Crew management is nothing like previous games. is done via RPG like elements.... I personaly dont like it. I prefered the old crew management. 4. In SH3 & 4, I set up my own targeting solutions. I hated just "locking" onto a ship and firing. How is it represented in SH5? You can still do manual targeting.... its the same as its always been. 5. And lastly, I can handle "minor" bugs. Is there anything "majorly" wrong with SH5? Major bugs where fixed with 1.2 patch (crew moral) and by the mods (stadimeter).... still a few minor bugs but nothing a save and reload wont fix. :salute: |
That Computer should run Silent Hunter 3, 4 and 5 with no problems but perhaps at a lower graphics setting. Been looking at those myself! Something you might check out is a website that will determine if your computer can run a variety of games:
http://www.systemrequirementslab.com I found out that Mozilla Firefox doesn't run well at that website and had to use Internet Explorer to get it to work. SH5 is a very good game even with the issues and DRM and I highly recommend it. Be sure to get JSGME and get some mods! |

Go for it.I was cautious, finally bought it,got P.O'd,stepped back counted to 10,had another go at it.It gets better all the time. The modders continue to improve things, and it should keep getting better over time.

if that is correct, you should run it at Maxed out settings. However note that if the game starts to be choppy, you might want to up the RAM a notch.. Quote:
