Heavy Drinkers Outlive Non-Drinkers

http://news.yahoo.com/s/time/0859920...Vhdnlkcmlua2Vy

Pretty interesting stuff, here. I wouldn't consider myself a heavy drinker, but now and then I like to hit the sauce - great for relaxation and social livelyhood and all that.

Now to find that maybe I'm not drinking enough???

PS: I guess Dowly's gonna live forver. :D

Regression analysis

After finishing my Physics degree I took a year studing pedagogics, and read several papers using regression analysis to find correlation between sociological parameters like grades and family income. After seeing what you can come up with I have lost my faith in regression analysis as a scientific tool unless its used in conjuction with some repeated experiment.

This is a classical example, note in specific the line:

"But even after controlling for nearly all imaginable variables - socioeconomic status, level of physical activity, number of close friends, quality of social support and so on"

Since you only can account for almost all variables but not all I do have trouble believing it. The important part is the causal explanation offered. Is it sound?

In this case it actually might be a sound explenation:

One important reason is that alcohol lubricates so many social interactions, and social interactions are vital for maintaining mental and physical health. As I pointed out last year, nondrinkers show greater signs of depression than those who allow themselves to join the party.

But actually most people I know who abstains are more social than my average friend, so I don't think this will apply for them anyway

Buzzkill.

Just kidding.

In all seriousness, that was the point that stuck out most to me as well.

Not to change the subject, guys, but I need your thoughts and prayers ASAP. I'm having a major health emergency.

I just checked the fridge and there's only one beer left.

I think it will be enough to keep me alive until I can get to the store tomorrow.

But payday's not until Wednesday, and I don't think my health plan is gonna cover this as a routine preventive expense.

Curse you, greedy bean counters! :stare:

Gee sure picked a bad time too quit drinkin, spent many a good year to get rid of this tavern tumor from my waist.

UnderseaLcpl 08-30-10 06:55 PM

I've been saying this for years but my doctor doesn't believe me. She'd rather say things like "James, you can't drink that much without incurring serious negative consequences" and other assorted medical technobabble.

Hr. Hibbert: Homer, you've ingested a dangerous amount of alcohol.

Homer (sluring): The only dangerous amount of alcohol is none.
