Yea like the Seawolf or Virginia or Trafalgar or Astute would never want or try to sniff a new Russian submarine such as the Borei.

The British releasing the recording of the Akula to the public domain is a rather cruel punishment.

There's a bit more to this than a simple cat and mouse scenario. Trident is under threat here, and it is very likely that the RN took the unusual step of releasing this information in order to illustrate that an SSBN is still seen by a foreign power as a major strategic asset: Enough for them to send a sub and loiter in our waters.

They just wanted a sound signature recording. Just as the West wanted a Borei class SSBN sound signature to be put on tape.

It's called exercising prudence by both sides. They are not enemies at war obviously but they are not exactly allies either. I believe it's called potential enemy :D. It is to be expected obviously.

As far as I see it there's no reason for the British government to release this encounter to the public but they did perhaps some people are trying to get more Astute class SSNs to be approved or even just simply to justify the whole program

Or it is what it was as well, an unofficial protest through the media because the Russian Navy or submarines have not been as active as it had been during the Soviet times until recently and the British had been lulled into believing that no other country had the rights to try to sniff their SSBNs.

It's as old as when people first realized they could agree or disagree with each other on basically everything.

Make no mistake that the Chinese will attempt similar acts too once they have the submarines they believe up to the required task.
Or even India.

The British fleet is considerably reduced.

It is required to receive of money.

It is required to frighten a public - that the public has approved - " yes, money is really necessary to it guys".

You see it is necessary to search, and to expel Russian subs from the British waters.

Even if (Russian subs) them there are not present:D

Well even if they were present they technically were just exercising their freedom of navigation cough cough :DL. Technically they can be anywhere aside within territorial sea border of the British isle.

Like the Alfa that ran under a NATO fleet on exercise on flanking speed during the cold war :DL

In international waters brawn speaks..so if one nation could technically and morally dominate a sea area they could pressure the other party to submit to their will. So even a seaborne based Su-33 could fly above another country's aircraft carrier fleet had it been accompanied with half a dozen or more aircraft carriers in close enough proximity LOL. Naval power projection in the area is what enforces self made rule in international waters I believe. No power no enforcement.

They can be there too legally if they surfaced and ran up the colors. :03:

don't know about Britain but they could fly them right over NYC or DC if they announced it to the US Government and informed Air Traffic Control. Its part of the Open Skys Treaty. Both nations can overfly the other to monitor each others military a set number of times a year.
