what am I doing wrong?
Hello DW skippers:salute:, I have had DW 1.04 on my Windows 7 64 bit for some time, but only just got around to giving it a go. It seems reasonable to try it out 'as is' before I start choosing mods, but given that I am a rank beginner, and not very good at reading manuals, thought I would go for an easy mission, which led me to ''African Bees', assuming two stars equates with 'easy'.
Already I am in difficulties! There are two problems. The first is that if I click on 'Options', with the view to being able to shut the music off ( for the sake of realism you understand), it brings up the speech recognition window, and wants me to go through the equipping and testing of my chosen device, which I am not interested in, so I get rid of that as soon as I can, but then the program crashes and I have to clear out the process and start over. I can live with the music if I have to, but thought I would mention it in case there is a ready solution. The other problem may be me doing things wrong, but I don't see what that wrong might be. I have to reverse my boat out of the docking bay, and after several goes I realise that putting the rudder over to hard right ( what happened to port and starboard?) and going back at engine 2/3rds, I can make a graceful exit and start lining my bow up to go through the harbour entrance. I KNOW I haven't hit anything astern, but I start seeing the damage percentage rise, and that sorta spoils it all for me as it seems I cannot even complete this simple move ( cant spell manoeuvre) in port. Hmph! |
With the speech recognition thing, there may be a way to disable it outside of DW. The best bet is if you're not planning on using it, don't install it in the first place. Sorry I can't be of more help on that point; I left the speech recognition off and disabled the music with no problems on day 1.
For the bee's nest, check on the 3D view to see if the boat is bottomed out. Patch 1.04 corrected the draft of the FFG, so missions designed for DW 1.0 might have harbors too shallow for the deeper draft of the updated FFG. |
When you say you seen noting behind you are you looking in the 3d window on the nav map (F6) or on the aft gun station (F12)? The 3d view window only shows items known to your sensors and can not always reflect reality.

Yep .. either use 'truth on' ctrl+shift+T (IIRC) to see truth in navmap. Or go to the watch station or sail, where you can see 'reality'.
Also I think in some mission there was problem with 1.04 because SCS increased FFG's keel depth .. and it dragged bottom right from the start. |
ah, thank you sirs - very helpful :)

The voice recognition software that came up is the Vista/Window 7 software. I have the same happen to me since I went to Vista. I just shut it down and go back to changing the Options. I have not yet found a way to stop it from happening.
I don't dive the FFG very much, so I may be off on this point. You may need to use the Port/Starbord APU on the bridge. |

I guess what we need to do is search the windows control panel and find the voice control module and disable it in windows. So, if anyone has found this in Windows Vista/7, please post some instructions on where it is so we can do the same. Thanks. |

I keep seeing reference to FFG, but I have not found a description of it. Thanks. |

As a quick solution you can edit the following line in the Dangerouswaters.ini file:
.DisableMusic Yes I think if you just step through the speech initialisation wizard then it won't come up again later. A small Speech window does come up before the intro-movie starts when I run DW , but you can ignore it or click on its close button. |
