baaad weather, baaad, torpedos, baaad calculations

Hi everyone,

Normally, when I leave Kiel in the winter months, I have calm waters and wind speed of 4 or something, so the sea is like a lake, but EVERYTIME I reach destination, I have wind speeds of 12 to 15, shaking my poor Type II like a cork. I remember reading something once about this being related to high transit TC. Is this true? What shoud I do? Do not go over 128?

I would LOVE a quiet Northern Sea for once. I just missed one torpedo because of a reaaaaaaaally bad range estimate (off by 500 meters or so, rapidly adjusted when I didn't get the sonar report of "short range", that I use to verify my calculations -is this cheating?).

For that shot I used an electric eel set to impact which prematurely exploded... I thought that just happened with magnetic eels... or is also because of the bad sea and just 2,5 -3 meters torpedo run depth (I just lost 2 out of my 5 eels in this forth patrol, I just want to go home in shame).

Thx!!

I feel your pain, I've been there and with manual targeting it's a pig sometimes when the weather is real bad. It is true that if you use TC over 128 the weather will freeze on it's current state. I normally use 128 or less TC and my weather changes. Also, I've just started using SH3Weather which randomizes the weather from the start through SH3Commander and I'm quite happy with it. I have found that I may get heavy cloud and 15 m/s winds but no rain whereas it always seemed that it used to be high wind, heavy clouds, rain and zero visibility. There just seems more variety, give it a try.

Yeah

War is hell. You have to admit though, it's better to blame misses on the weather than the calculations. :yep:

In GWX3, I keep 512 Time compresion and the navigation map scale to 125 km.
Whith this parameters the weather is changing every 24 or 48 hours (game time).
Even saved games while I was in the middle of a big storm. When realoding them I just have to wait for 24h or 48h (game time) and the weather changes.

Since using GWX3 I've had no real issues with weather. Yeah I curse it when it doesn't go my way (unarmed lone ship in a storm and I can't use my deck gun) but If I wait long enough it changes. TC in my experience, since GWX3 anyway, has had no bearing on the weather. I use 1024x frequently because I don't get much time to play and I don't get permastorms anymore.

What I would agree with, though, is that saving and then loading in a particular weather condition resets the weather-change-countdown-gizmo-thingy and makes the storm last longer. (Someone with more technical knowledge of the thingy might be able to elaborate).

To Damo... maybe I'll give a try to SH3Weather, but I amb pesky about enabling mods mid-carreer, even in port. I have had corrupts saves constantly while messing around trying to improve the experience. So I'll try it in my next one. Thx!

To Raymond... yeah, bad weather AND bad torpedos, my electric eel set on impact exploded mid way! Is that because of a shalow run depth while a heavy storm was raging? I've been playing SH3 for a long while and premature explosions never happened to me if I set my torpedos on impact.

To Empty... thx! How do I know if my map scale is at 125 km? Is there an indication somewhere? Or I just put the ruler on 125 km and adapt the screen?

To Gordon... I use GWX3 and have permastorms all the time. Weird. Oh, and I save A LOT. After a completed patrol I may have something near 15-20 saves. I use to play for 2 to 4 hours max. So maybe I am resetting the countdown too often.

Thx!

Doesn't SH3 Weather just give you whatever weather from the start, rather than being calm and slightly overcast in port to a more realistic variable option, either season or user dependant?

Yep. :yep: I lets you start a patrol in the pouring rain if you like - nothing else.

Sounds like that could be the case to me.

BTW.....storms (especially in the Atlantic) could easily last a week or more.

I thought SH3weather was included in GWX3?

Yep it certainly sounds like saving lots might be the issue here. I rarely have more than 3 or 4 saves in a patrol...and boy is it a good excuse to keep playing. "Sorry sweetheart but if I save in this storm I'll be haunted by it for days. ". It also goes well with "Well, I'm being hunted by destroyers and I can't save underwater or the game might crash next time I load." Every cloud has a silver lining!

There is another little detail I forgot. But I don't know if it is related with weather or not.
When I leave the base, at the beginig of the patrol, I try to use just 1 tc until I'm 60 km away. Then I increase tc slowly and step by step: 2, 4 , 8 ,16, 64,... And in every step, I check I can move freely the cursor with the mouse.
I´m not sure if this is important or not. But just in case ....

About saving games, every time I save I use a new name for the game saved. And from time to time I delete the old ones. Specially when I'm in a long patrol, like for example 6 months (game time) in a IXD2.

"I thought SH3weather was included in GWX3?"

No, the real weather fix has been included in GWX3. It's some changes in the scene.dat.
